I will never forget the kindness Mr. Briedenbach showed every student, really truly taking the time to listen. He had that infectious smile that made you realize whatever mistakes you thought you made were not so serious after all. He was one of those teachers who respected you right back. I am sorry for your loss.

My dearest Fred, how you will be missed. You will not only be remembered for your teaching, coaching, and expanding of so many minds, but for the generous and gracious way you lived your life, a fine example for us all. You were not only my former teacher and coach, but I have been fortunate enough to have you as part of my family and am blessed by the wonderful memories we have shared together, and for that I am grateful. I will cherish them, and you, always. To Sue, Carrie, and Bob; how proud and lucky I am to be part of your extended family. Your strength and grace you've shown through this is to be admired, and I know Fred is smiling. Thinking of you.

My mom just asked me if we heard about Fred, and we hadn't...Speaking also for my brother, we both just thought the world of Fred. He was a great (most patient easy-going)teacher. He also payed a lot of attention to both Steve and I in the long jump. We will always remember Mr. Breidenbach!!!

Mrs. Breidenbach, Carrie and Bobby,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your husband and dad. He was easily one of my favorite teachers at Capital and one of Capitals best coaches. I also had Bobby as a classmate and I was fortunate enough to know him for my junior high, high school and college years. As I read messages from others I can only reiterate some of the same things because he was always a fun and happy teacher. He taught my brother and I both in track and he always seemed upbeat and willing to help. He really made a difference in so many lives and I am truly sorry for your loss.

because that is the feeling of everyone who knew him. We always will remember the good times we have had over the years.
That's easy--there were no bad times in his life as far as we can
recall. Sue, the strength and care that you provided during Fred's
illness stands out without equal. We are very proud of you and stand ready to support you during the coming months.

Dear Sue, Carrie, Bob and family,
When the topic came up of Fred's nicknames, I had to chuckle. One was not used. My brother told me years ago, if I really wanted to get Breidenbach's attention, to call him "Freddie Bear." A nickname some of his friends called him.(?) Anyway, he also advised me to run like crazy if I used it, never tell anyone else the name and never, ever, disclose where I learned it! (Like he wouldn't have known). I don't think I ever called Fred that, but I do think it described him well. He was such a great man, my thoughts are with you.

As a Freshman, after logging zero stats in Freshman Football, and then getting up at 5 AM daily for an 0-7 Swim Team, I joined track. In the first meet, Mr. B put me in lane 7 or so for the 400 meters behind an older runner (Thanks to John Trapp for being that runner) and I ran behind him the whole race for a personal best. In the second meet, I said "Coach, I had a little left, can I pass John if I feel like it?" He looked surprised and skeptical and said that was fine. So I eased around John on the homestretch and finished in another PR. In the third race, I was surprised to see that I had been given my own lane (against OHS I believe) and finished an unexpected third. I have many other memories of a great man having confidence in me and still keeping it fun, whether a sunny May afternoon, or drizzly April morning. Thanks, Coach, for being one of a few who knew it wasn't motivation I needed, but tempering and protection from my own drive to do well.
My best to Sue, Carrie, Bob, John and family. -Jay Jamerson

We were saddened to hear about Fred's passing. Our Dad, Floyd Carr, taught with Fred at Olympia HS and Capital HS. It was fun to listen to Dad talk about the "teacher outings" and all the other stuff they got themselves into. I always enjoyed Fred's sense of humor and the constant support he gave to his students. We lost Dad March 10, 2004. Jeff called and talked with Fred for almost an hour shortly after that. I know that it was a great comfort to him to talk to Fred, about Dad. Embrace your family and share the joy that Fred brought to so many people, and the blessing of his presense in your lives. Sue, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family during this time.

Mrs. Breidenbach and Family,
I was sad to hear of Mr. Breidenbach's passing. I have fond memories of time spent in Mr. B's classroom - it was one of my favorite classes in part because of the pottery but mostly due to Mr. Breidenbach's kindness and ability to treat all students with respect. I learned about more than clay in the years I spent in his classroom. Whenever I hear a James Taylor song, I think of him (and smile!) as we played that dust-covered album over and over again. Yup, those were fun times.
I am so sorry for your loss - my thoughts and prayers are with you.

We are so sorry for your loss, Sue. Our condolances to you and your family. Fred certainly maintained an upbeat spirit through his illness. I was glad that we were able to see you at Daryl's birthday party last year. I still have a clay pot that my son Bob made when he took pottery from Fred. I remember how proud he was of it, and have much he enjoyed Fred's class. I would like to stop by to visit with you in a few weeks when things have settled down.

As a fellow teacher with Fred at Capital High School, I appreciated his sunny daily greeting at the mailboxes. That same smile and encouragement was also one of many gifts he gave his students and the athletes he coached.
I have alsways found comfort in this passage from John Donne's "Meditation XVII" where he comments on death and suffering: "...all mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better laguage; and every chapter must be so translated....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death dimishes me because I am invovlved in mankind...."
Fred's legacy endures for all of us who were prvileged to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Sue, and with your children and extended family.

As my ninth grade basketball coach at Washington Junior High, he provided me with the opportunity and inspiration to be accepted as I was a new student looking for a place to fit in. I loved him as a teacher as well and still display the work from his classes in my home. Dear Sue: I was saddened to read in the mornings paper about Fred's passing. He was a good man. In the 60s, you allowed a young man to live with you & you treated him like family. You both saw not only the artist, but a troubled boy that needed guidance. It was remarkable because at the time you were young marrieds with Carrie and you included him (and me) in family gatherings.
