I am so very sorry to hear Kay lost her battle with cancer. What a joy she was and will remain to so many of us. I valued her friendship and wisdom and am so glad I got to visit with her last summer. I wish for all of you comfort as you move foreward in your own lives, drawing upon the wonderful gifts she left all of you in your hearts. God's peace to you and all my love.

Kari and Willie, your Mom made many decisions in her life so that she could be a good Mother to you. Sometimes this may be hard to understand, but as you grow and have your own children you will appreciate her even more. Kay fought her battle with cancer bravely. I'm sorry you had to lose her.

Bill, Kari & Will,
We will think of Kay often and with great fondness as we do all of you. Will remember our Batten family reunions and how blessed we are to have been touched by Kay's special blend of gentle compassion, good old fashioned horse sense, and wonderful sense of humor.
Know that you are in our hearts and prayers now and always.

I worked with Kay for a number of years in SSU. We were a special group. It could get pretty tense in there some times, but we all pooled our resourses, got the job done and took great pride in our work. Kay, of course, was a vital cog in that well-oiled wheel. I remember her with great fondness and respect.

Bill, Kari, and Willie--our thoughts are with you in this time of sadness and recovery but Kay will no longer suffer. She kept her cheerful attitude and giggle even throughout her overwhelming pain and suffering. I will remember her fun at Batten family gatherings as well as her professional and caring presence with her patients at St. Peter.

To the Batten family: You do not know me but your mother and I were good friends throughout high school and through nursing school. After she got married we lost touch except through my good friend Francis Jones who kept me informed of Kay's life. She lived with my mother and I for a short time before entering nursing school. My mother as well as I was deeply sadened to hear of her death. I have a number of pictures of Kay when she was in high school that I would be happy to share if you are interested (dire461@ecy.wa.gov). Those memories and pictures bring about many smiles. We had a lot of fun together in our youth. I will always remember her and her great smile.

There are no words to describe how we feel for your family right now. Nobody can ever describe Kay Batten. She had it all: Kind, giving, intelligent, and such a terrific supporter of her dear family. I have seen so much of Kay in you, Kari and in you too, Willy. You can be proud of that. Bill, your grief is in direct relation to how much you loved and were loved by Kay. She remains one in a million.
