Obituary of Violet Bertha Bliss Nagle Thurlow

Violet B. Thurlow, age 91, passed away April 7, 2014 at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington. She was born on September 3, 1922, in Olympia to John William Bliss and Pearl May Reed. To this union, four children were born in Olympia: Florence died at birth in 1921; Violet; Richard “Dick,” born 1925 and died in 2011; and June Salter, born 1938 and currently lives in West Olympia. Violet went to elementary school in East Olympia; she did not complete high school but was very proud in later years to receive her GED. On August 31, 1939, she married Curtis L. Nagle in East Olympia. Curtis was career Army and spent many years at Ft. Lewis; they also lived in Arizona and Hanau, Germany. For many years, Violet was a member of the East Olympia Church. In the 1960s, she taught Sunday school to 5- and 6-year-olds and did this for 20 years; at times, she would have class in her home. Curtis died in 1987 and she later married Jacob “Boston” Thurlow. Violet enjoyed oil painting, and for a while in the 1990s, she was a member of the Olympia Senior Citizen “Kitchen Band.” Surviving are her sister, June, Olympia; daughters, Candy (John) Sapp, East Olympia; Yvonne Atchison, Texas; Gordon (Joyce), Puyallup; John, East Olympia; and many grandchildren.
