Obituary of Richard L. Rhoads

Richard L. Rhoads, 64, of the North Beach area, passed away September 4, 2013 surrounded by family. Richard was born October 7, 1948 to Cleo and Betty Rhoads of Montesano. He was a graduate of Moclips High School, and a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam. He married Sandra Hoyles at the Chapel by the Sea on September 12, 1971. Born the son of a grocer, Richard and his family pioneered the Rhoads Grocery of Pacific Beach, bringing fresh produce and meats to the locals. From there, Richard went on to Top Foods and Charlie’s Produce, driving to Olympia in his faithful Geo. He also took pride in his work at the Taholah Mercantile, Jay’s Fruit Stand and Lil’s Pantry. Together Richard and Sandy did their best to help their neighbors and others in need. Known for his hot coffee, fresh donuts, great laugh and conversation, Richard’s most important role was that of father and husband. He put all his efforts into supporting his daughter, Tammy, as she pursued her journey into adulthood, and working side by side with his best friend and son, Richard (Tom), as they restored his 1935 green Ford truck. Richard was happily reunited with his daughter, Tina, with whom he was able to laugh and at last enjoy all of his family together. Richard was proud to see his children marry in the last two years. His faithful wife of 43 years stayed by his side in good times and bad as illness due to a stroke overtook his life in the last four years. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Cleo Rhoads; and brother, Terry Rhoads of Montesano. He is survived by his mother, Betty Rhoads of the Beehive Assisted Living in McCleary; and his loving boxer companion, Roo. Please join his wife, Sandra Rhoads of Centralia; daughter, Tina Hendrickson of Port Angeles; son, Richard (Tom) Rhoads of Copalis; and daughter, Tammy Rhoads Berg of Centralia, as they celebrate his life at the Chapel by the Sea in Moclips, where Richard and Sandra were married 43 years ago. The potluck celebration will be on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. Any donations to cover funeral and medical expenses will humbly be appreciated by the family.
