I had the good fortune to know Gary and his family when I was a boy. He was not only my Little League Baseball coach but he also coached my older and younger brother. I have very fond memories of summers spent with the Nicholson family, either playing baseball, gathering after games and also times at Shorecrest. Gary was a special man and was very giving of himself. He made me feel special because of his devotion. Even though our paths have separated, I felt a closeness to the Nicholson family at Gary’s memorial service. Hearing the testimonies of others there made me remember the man I knew so many years ago. May God bless you all, may your grief pass quickly to be replaced with fond memories of Gary.

I was expecting Kay for a family dinner one night, and couldn’t find her. She was late. Then we got a phone call; Kay was not able to come. She was with Gary, and he got on the phone and said that Kay was not feeling well; he was going to take her home and make sure she was OK. He told me not to worry that he would take care of her–and he never stopped! This was 6 months before they got married and I can say he kept his word — he took very good care of Kay and her family for over 27 years! He was a great provider, and one of the things I’ll always be thankful for is the time he let Kay and Mariah spend with me. The 3 of us would go on Grand Adventures for a few days or they would come to the beach for a few days, and he never objected. Because of that Kay and I and Mariah and I have a very strong bond. That wouldn’t have happened if Gary had not let them travel with me. Gary was a good cook; he liked to fix whatever I wanted when I came to visit, and my favorite meal was friend chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and corn on the cob (when in season). He really picked GOOD corn! He loved to tease me about politics, football, Fox News, boyfriends (where??), what I liked to watch on TV — and more. What I liked best was him telling me I was welcome any time because I was family! That was so generous of him. He told me to come and help Kay when he got so sick, and he knew I’d help with Mariah too. He was a generous and loving man and extended that to me too. I will miss him so much. He has left a big hole in our family.

Gary was a pleasant and loving Brother-In-Law. When we visited, he always waited on us hand and foot, purchased whatever food he knew we liked, and planned activities we would enjoy participating in, even forsaking his own TV programs to allow us to watch our choice. He cared for us, and we cared for him. We will miss him.

73 years of my brother Gary always being there for me. All I had to do was ask. I am so proud of all that he has done in his life and the wonderful family he has. I had a second marriage 8 years ago and he walked me to my husband Lee Thomasson. Mariah sang at our reception and it was so special and he was so proud of her. What a great “PaPa” he was to her. I could share a lot of things, but I am sure he is watching me, I will miss him so.

Though I did not see Uncle Gary often, I remember him well. Who could forget that Nicholson humor that both he and my dad both had; they were so much alike in many ways. Our prayers go out to the family and friends during these trying times. We know he will be missed, but take comfort in the times we had with him while he was with us.
Rest in Peace Uncle Gary
With Much Love,
Darrin Nicholson

My prayers are the family. I haven’t seen Gary in at least 30 years. But I remember some neat times we had when I was younger and you’d come to Mom & Dad’s house. I enjoyed watching the Gary Nicholson’s life. One of the things I liked so much about Gary is that he never treated my like a kid and really listened to me.

So sorry to hear about Gary and his fight with Lukemia. I will always remember him as a man with a smile and somene who loved sports and kids. It was fun watching him play basketball in high school and going to the state tournament. I’ll never forget the time when I was staying with Bev. and Gary while I was recovering from a foot operation and Gary let their parakeet out of the cage when I was knitting a pair of argyle socks and the parakeet (which I was deathly afraid of) went right for my hair. My needles went in all directions – he was a practical joker and always looking for a way to have fun. He will be missed!

So sorry you’ve lost such a terrific man. He has always been special to me — more like a brother than brother-in-law, since he lived with us his last couple years in high school. I remember going to the basketball games where he was always a star player, and the year the team went to state there was always standing room only. Gary always seemed surprised that anyone would go out of their way for him, as he just didn’t see himself as anything special. But he was. And he will always be remembered for his kindness and gentleness and the special way he had with kids.
