May Murrell

Obituary of May Edna Murrell

May Murrell lived a most extraordinary life…full, rich, and with promise. Having lived through the Depression, May obtained her BA in her 40s and her Masters of Art in her 50s. She was quite a unique woman. If you knew her, you would know she was a Cultural Anthropologist and minored in Entomology. But more importantly, she was a brilliant artist, sculptress, and mind. Alone, she transformed a bare-bones barn into a home and art studio…and with her avant-garde thinking and untiring energy and drive, May was a force with which to be reckoned…even to the end. Following in her Papa’s footsteps of traveling (He was sewing up flat bicycle tires with silk in the Alps as he traveled in the late 1800s.), she was known as the “Chicken Wire Lady” when she ventured alone into the dicier parts of Brazil. And she loved traveling beyond words…or with them. She gave each of her three children a strength and power of their own, for which they will always be grateful. And May has become an inspiration to everyone. She was loved and admired without knowing it. Please leave memories of May or condolences for her family in the Guestbook below.
