Obituary of Kathryn Mugartegui

Kathryn Mugartegui, 63, died of cancer on June 3, 2014 in Olympia, Washington. She was born August 9, 1950 to Joseph and Virginia (Bench) Mugartegui in Elma, Washington. She lived in Tumwater, Washington most of her life, and was a graduate of Tumwater High School. Kathryn worked her entire career in the health industry, primarily for her family in their health food stores, J-Vee and Smart Nutrition. Early in her career in the 1970s, she worked for Jack LaLanne in his health food store in Los Angeles, California. Her Christian faith, her family and friends, and her love of educating people (including raw food instruction) were central to her life. She also loved horses, sculpting, gardening, singing, composing music, and the color purple. In her youth, she was a member of 4-H and raised sheep as her project. She was a member of Northstar Church of God in Tumwater. Her favorite saying was, “Just forgive them!” Kathryn was bigger “than life” and joyously worshipped God and witnessed to absolutely anyone who would listen, or even those who didn’t listen. She was a gifted sculptor and enjoyed other forms of art as well. Her paper castings were amazing and she had such a passion to create. She grew up with horses and actually was an accomplished equestrian and was preparing to try out for the Olympics since she was that good! However, she decided to marry instead and had her daughter, Felicia. To all her nieces and nephews, and other family members, she was affectionately referred to as “Our Auntie Mame”! Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Felicia Kayne; brother, Craig Mugartegui (Sandy); sister, Charlotte Persoon (Jerry); mother, Virginia Mugartegui; and one grandchild. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Mugartegui; maternal grandfather, Howard Bench; and maternal grandmother, Charlotte Doty.
