Obituary of Nelson Meyers

Nelson Meyers Jr., beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, passed away at home in Lacey, Washington on May 15, 2015. Born December 28, 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana, he attended Joseph S. Clark Senior High School and Dillard University, where he was a member of the track and football teams. He married Lorenza Johnson (Fortune) in 1961 and had his first daughter, Sheila. Nelson and Lorenza moved to Seattle, Washington, where they had two more daughters, Sharon and Patricia. He later would have another daughter, Vazantha, with his relationship with Cora Vaughn. Nelson continued to be active in recreational sports. He was the eldest of five children born to Nelson Meyers Sr. and Clara Allen Meyers. He was baptized at the early age of six by his grandfather, Rev. John Meyers Sr., at the Second Nazareth Baptist Church in New Orleans. He is survived by his daughters, Sheila Meyers, Sharon Sears, Patricia Meyers, and Vazantha Meyers; seven grandchildren, Darrell Peko Jr, Yonas Michael, Pryce Johnson, Mariah Caldwell, Bria Johnson, Earnest Sears III, and Chrystian Sears; three great grandchildren, Darrell Peko Jr., Stella Michael, and Saniyah Woods; brother, Allen Meyers Sr.; sisters, Patricia Washington Meyers, and Pearl Meyers; sisters-in-law, Cherlyn Meyers and Shirley Meyers; son-in-law, Earnest Sears Jr.; aunt, Mary Allen; and longtime friend, Kathy DiJulio. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. His family came first and he made sure they knew it. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson Meyers Sr. and Clara Allen Meyers; his grandparents, Melville and Alma Allen Sr., and Rev. John and Sarah Meyers, Sr.; and one brother, Stanley Meyers. Nelson Meyers enjoyed over 30 years of work accomplishments. His first job was with Boeing. He eventually began a successful career in the non-profit and public sector. He worked for Seattle OIC, and Employment Security Department of the State of Washington. During his 20 years at Employment Security, he worked in the Puget Sound Region and throughout the State in managing work force development programs. He was both a regional and statewide Director. He retired as an Assistant Commissioner of Employment Security. He was an avid sports fan of tennis, football, basketball and golf. He belonged to the Eastside Golf Club for many years where he enjoyed golfing and road trips with some of his closest friends, Earl Turner and Charles Brown (deceased). He was able to cheer on his beloved Seattle Seahawks during their first Super Bowl win in 2013. Over the years, he valued his friendships with so many, including Darrell Fregia, Woody Gray (deceased), Jeff Washington, Ike Turner and Charles Sadler. His favorite time was spent with family. He valued every moment with his children and grandkids. He loved going home to New Orleans yearly for the holidays to be with his beloved sisters, brothers, and family. Nelson will be missed and loved by everyone who was blessed to know him. There will be a viewing on Thursday, May 21, 2015, 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Funeral Alternatives of Washington, 2830 Willamette Drive NE, Lacey, WA 98516.

Service Information:

The family will have a memorial service in early summer to honor him.

Louisiana Service and Interment:

There will be a viewing on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. at Epiphany Baptist Church, 5200 Cannes St., New Orleans, LA 70129. Services will follow at 10:00 a.m. Nelson will be laid to rest with his father and mother at Mount Olizet Cemetery, 4000 Norman Meyer Ave., New Orleans, LA 70122.
