Obituary of Christian D. Martin

Our beloved brother, Christian D. Martin, age 58, passed away on October 22, 2013 after a long, courageous battle with esophageal cancer. In his last days, he received compassionate, loving care in his home from his four sisters, one brother, and former wife. Chris was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 26, 1955 to Carmel and Nancy (Knowles) Martin. A short time later they moved to Hialeah, Florida. Chris attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School until the 8th grade where he was an altar boy and played the trumpet. He also played baseball and football for Palm Springs Optimist Club, was a boy scout, and became a Young Marine where he learned to scuba dive. He loved fishing and hunting for snakes. He graduated from Hialeah-Miami Lakes (first graduating class) in 1973 and went on to spend three years in the U.S. Army where he was a computer technician. He worked at Turkey Point Nuclear Facility in South Florida before heading to Washington State to work for WPPSS, which never got off the ground. He became a postal employee and retired June 2013 after 33 years. He visited the Florida Keys several times over the years and enjoyed fishing with cousin Ronnie. He was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, clamming, camping, skiing and hiking, always finding solace in nature, and in 2009 he earned his private pilot’s license. One of his greatest passions was cooking, and he dreamed of someday becoming a chef. He already was one and just didn’t know it! He was a happy child always doing a happy dance, loved to play air drumsticks on our Dad’s head, enjoyed Sunday barbecues at Haulover Beach, ice cream at Dressel’s Farm, rolling down the “castle” at Greynolds Park, breakfast at the Rx Drugstore after Sunday mass, swimming and bowling. Later on, watching Sunday afternoon football with Dad became a regular event. He was an avid concert goer since the early 70s all the way until the 2007 Van Halen concert in Seattle. Chris was a good student, a good employee, a good father, a good son, a good friend, a good person and a great brother, always striving to do the right thing. He had a huge heart and was always giving, especially to our mother and our youngest sister. He was preceded in death by our father, Carmel Martin (1925-1981) and sister, Gabrielle (1965). He leaves behind our mother, Nancy; four sisters, Robin Pedron (Joe), Mary Pelaez (Ray), Jacqueline Hernandez (Luis), Tonya Reese (Mike); and brother, Patrick Martin (Dianna); nephews, Tom and John; nieces, Ariel and Alisha; two adopted sons, Neil and Dan and their wives, and five grandchildren; former wife, Judy Martin; and his beloved dog, Champ. His life was cut too short and he’s missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace and be always in our hearts. A private service was held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Tumwater, Washington on October 25, 2013 where Chris is interred. Thank you for your prayers.
