Obituary of Mary Jacquelin “Jackie” Junk

Mary Jacquelin “Jackie” (Ryan) Junk passed away peacefully at home in Olympia, Washington, on February 24, 2014, surrounded by her loving family and dedicated caregivers. Jackie was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Jack and Doris Ryan on January 26, 1929. This beautiful, graceful woman graduated from Central High School in 1946. She then attended the University of Tulsa and was a sorority sister of Kappa Delta. While there, she met her husband, William Pryor Junk, Jr. Bill and Jackie were married on June 7, 1947, in Tulsa and were blessed with a large family of seven children. Their military life allowed them to travel around the US and live in many foreign countries. During those years, she spent most of her time keeping up with the family’s travels as they moved 32 times. She kept the home fires burning by catering to her family’s needs and balancing home life. Jackie loved to entertain and was always a gracious hostess to family and friends. She never forgot her Southern upbringing when it came to hospitality. In 1977, Col. William Pryor Junk, Jr. and Jackie retired in Washington State, building their home in Olympia, overlooking a gorgeous view of the Puget Sound. After the loss of Bill in 1986, Jackie was once again blessed with special partnerships with Phil Downey and then Dale Heltsley, who also preceded her in death. Her loss will be felt by many in the community. She enjoyed getting together with friends, traveling, gardening, bridge, ballroom dancing, her church activities, Seahawks, and the nature view from her home. She is survived by her brother, Dennis Ryan (Loretta) of Oklahoma City, OK; sister, Margaret “Maggie” Darnell (Denny) of Tulsa, OK; sister-in-law, Lila Junk of Tulsa, OK; her seven children, Jeannie Junk (Rick Salkov) of Annandale, VA , Linda Bortle (Ed) of Marietta, GA, Ann Way (Steve) of Olympia, WA, Bill Junk (Alice Svetlik) of Dallas, TX, Dennis Junk (Debbie) of Roy, WA, John Junk of Seattle, WA, Frank Junk of Seattle, WA; and blessed with 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 6, 2014, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Olympia, Washington, followed by a reception. Private inurnment to be held at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington at a later date. Remembrances should be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Michael Catholic Church, Olympia, Washington, Providence Sound Home Care and Hospice Foundation, Olympia, Washington or International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation.
