Obituary of Dorothy May Johnson

Dorothy, 82, passed away in King County, Washington on September 21, 2013. She was born August 4, 1931 in St. Ignatius, Montana, to Ray and May (Boyd) Ball. Dorothy graduated from Deer Park High School and The Evergreen State College with a degree in education. Dorothy resided in rural Olympia, Washington for over 50 years. Prior to that, she lived in Eastern Washington, where she met her husband, Dale, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. They were married on her 19th birthday, August 4, 1950. They shared 60 wonderful years together at the time of his passing in 2010. During her early married years, Dorothy was dedicated to raising her children and enjoying her grandchildren. She was also involved with children’s ministry at the FUMC of Olympia. In the mid 1980s, Dorothy became an ordained minister and led churches in Lakewood, Washington, and then Port Townsend, Washington. She served as a Pastor for over 10 years. Dorothy and Dale moved back to their family home in Olympia in the late 1990s. Dorothy was involved in adult Sunday School ministry at FUMC of Olympia consistently since then. She was also an active member of the South Union Grange and has held many offices, both local and state. She loved volunteering at the Thurston County Fair and the Puyallup Fair. Some of her hobbies include knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She enjoyed travelling with friends and family, and RVing and camping using her Thousand Trails membership. Dorothy was on the board of Habitat for Humanity for several years. Please give any memorial gifts to this worthy organization. She is survived by five children, 11 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren: Lori (Bob) Taylor, their daughters Kirsten and Mara, and Mara’s sons Finley and Tobin; Gail (Walt) Foster and their daughter, Valerie; Monte (Tori) Johnson, their children Ken, Jackie, and Katy, and Jackie’s sons Joseph and Austin; Neil Johnson, his children Aaron and Miriam, and Aaron’s son Logan; and Marc Johnson and his children Sarah, Michelle, and David.
