Obituary of Tom Rolfs

On Saturday evening, April 20, 2024, Tom Rolfs, a loving husband, father and papa, passed away at the age of 84.  He was born in Jerseyville, Illinois, on May 7, 1939, to Magdalyn and Archie Rolfs.

In 1964, Tom received his Master's Degree from Washington State University.  In 1965, he began his career (32 years) with the Department of Corrections, retiring as Director for the Division of Prisons in 1997.  On November 19, 1979 (45 years ago), he married his wife, Dian, blessing their blended marriage with two sons and two daughters (Mark, Michael, Jill and Melissa).

Tom has been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1995.  He enjoyed filling such roles as Stephen Minister counselor, coordinator for communion servers, and a member of the nominating committee for elders and deacons.

Tom was a man of many talents.  His love for gardening included raising many different varieties of dahlias.  Even in the spring, planting all 40+ bulbs was simply a labor of love for him.

Another one of Tom's interests was not only adding to his own coin collection but collecting eight sets of uncirculated state quarters for all 50 states.  The sets proved to be an excellent learning tool for young family members and friends.

Last but not least, one day Tom had hoped that he would learn to master the art of flying.  Needless to say, on July 3, 1976, he fulfilled the requirements for his private pilot's license.  It was such an exciting time for him.

Family vacations at the Lake Wenatchee cabin was one of his favorites.  Even though it was connected to electricity, the meals were typically prepared on a wood stove or the on-going beach bonfire. Another favorite family location was his in-law's retirement home on Hood Canal.  There was always fishing (for bullheads or pogies with the kiddos), digging steamer clams, and picking up oysters to cook over the fire pit. Of course, there was never any secret about Tom's serious craving for chocolate and homemade ice cream.

In 2002, Tom and Dian were fortunate enough to travel, enjoying trips to Europe, the New England states, Greece and the Greek Isles, as well as two cruises (one to the Transatlantic British Isles and one to Hawaii).

Tom is survived by his wife, Dian; daughter, Jill, and son-in-law, Warren; granddaughters, Mia (18) and Emma (15); son, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Michelle; son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Lisa.  Tom was preceded in death by his son, Brian, in 1970 and his daughter, Melissa, in 2019.

Tom's Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1925 Boulevard Rd. SE, Olympia, WA 98501.  Donations may be sent to the church at PO Box 2033, Olympia, WA 98507.
