Obituary of Hugh Moody
Hugh passed away August 11, 2023, in Lacey, Washington, after years of fighting Alzheimer’s. Surprisingly and lovingly, he recognized his wife, Deb, and their son, Grant, to the end of his 85 years.
Hugh lived in Olympia for years. He was a high school teacher of math and social studies at Olympia and Capital High Schools until he retired in 1992. Afterwards, he and Deb traveled to Fiji to see if they wanted to move there and join friends. After a month, they decided it wasn’t for them and came home where they opened State of the Arts Gallery in downtown Olympia. Hugh ran the frame shop and did the books, while Deb ran the gallery. They had great fun in this adventure and met many wonderful people. After 25 years, they sold it and officially retired.
Hugh was a graduate of the American High School in Casablanca, French Morocco. He always joked he graduated the year Deb was born (1955). He went on to college and graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham with his bachelor’s and went to Eugene’s University of Oregon, where he received his master’s in mathematics.
He is survived by his wife, Debra Martz Moody, who he married in 1988. He was previously married to Eleanor Hertneck and had three children; he is survived by sons, Dwight and Ben; and predeceased by his daughter, Gail Marie. His parents, Richard and Frances Moody, also predeceased him.
Hugh was an avid reader and regional sports enthusiast. He loved the ocean, where his remains will be scattered. No service is planned.
