Obituary of Marie Elizabeth Gilner

On July 6, 2023, Marie Elizabeth Gilner passed away in Lacey, Washington, at the age of 82 due to dementia.

Marie was born in 1940 with her twin brother in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada. She had a happy childhood growing up with her four siblings.  She graduated from Grand Falls High School in 1958. She then attended nursing school in Moncton, New Brunswick, where she graduated as valedictorian. She was an accomplished pianist.

In 1963, she married her first husband, Wayne, who was stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Maine. After their marriage, Marie immigrated to the United States and later became a U.S. citizen. Marie and Wayne had four daughters and moved frequently to multiple U.S. states and Ireland before settling in Florida in 1979.

Marie loved the sunshine and being in or near the water. She was a lifelong learner, trying her hand at several things, including pilot training and obtaining her scuba diving certification. After originally leaving her nursing career to be a homemaker, she later owned two businesses and worked as a real estate agent. She returned to the nursing profession in midlife, which she continued until her retirement.

In 1990, Marie married the late Burt Gilner. They enjoyed attending Miami Dolphins football games and traveled frequently. Marie also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She moved to Washington in 2021 under the care of her daughter.

Marie touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

Marie is survived by her daughters, Lisa Lipe, Krista Lipe, and Kara Owen; four grandchildren; a great granddaughter; and siblings, George Theriault, Rita Rogers, Rino Theriault, and Emmett Theriault. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burt Gilner; her daughter, Michelle Lipe; and her parents, George and Rosemary Theriault.
