Ward had special significance to me in that he hired me in 1982 to be one of several family physicians at the Olympia Clinic. During my interview at a wonderful restaurant in Tacoma, we discovered that Ward had served with my father-in-law, Richard Eastman, as conscientious objectors during WWII. They both worked in research on Hepatitis A in Philadelphia and volunteered to be exposed to the virus. Later, when discussing a patient, he provided me with a pearl of wisdom which I immediately applied "Never refer to anyone as a "hypochondriac." I adhered to that advice from then on, yet, I did find a booklet, "First Aid for the Hypochondriac" which I placed in one of my exam rooms. I never heard once from anyone who did not enjoy that book! It was also my pleasure to enjoy many of Ward and Alice's events at their home, including one memorable Thanksgiving dinner. I also had the pleasure of getting to know Prudence a bit during those years, and visited Ward at Panorama City when he was there. What a guy! Heartfelt condolences to his surviving family and friends, and much gratitude to you Ward.

As David and his family know, I met Ward when he lived at the Panorama C&R because of my work singing to elders. Ward and I had a very special connection. Once he shared a poem with me that he had read in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Assn.). It was a beautiful poem by Carol Halberstad. I put the song to music as a surprise for Miles--he loved it and always requested I play it for him, as he said it expressed his worldview perfectly. Carol loved it too--she and her publisher granted permission for me to record the song. She became a friend and also had several conversations with Miles. When a book of Carol's poems came out, she honored both Ward and me for the creation of the song. Here is a link to the song that happened because of Ward, the words to the poem are included:

I miss Ward very much. I had the honor of singing at his 100th birthday party, and played some of "Ward's Greatest Hits" as I teasingly referred to his faves: Country Roads, Amazing Grace, Leaving on a Jet Plane were some on the list.
My deepest condolences to the family for the loss of both Ward and Joel. Ward was an exceptional human being and I am so honored I got to share some time with him.

My mom and dad, Ed and Rosemary Shattuck, were blessed to have Dr. Miles as their doctor during the first years of his practice at Olympia's Group Health Cooperative. They respected him and appreciated him for all of his care and attention to their every need. He was a part of their lives just as much as he was their doctor. I am thankful to know he lived a long and rewarding life.

I had the opportunity of opening the X-ray services at the GH Olympia Clinic in 1972. I was a young person who really didn’t know much about what I was doing, since Seattle management wasn’t very helpful. As busy as Dr Miles was with the opening of the clinic he always took the time to help me with problems and prompted me to come to solutions on my own. He really helped me develop critical thinking skills I used going forward in my life. Although our life journeys did not continue together for very long he set me up for success and I will never forget his kindness and loving manner.
