I thoroughly appreciated Kay’s hands on approach to food service at the elementary schools where I was principal. She really worked with her employees to provide healthy meals that kids would really eat! She brought her great smile into the schools and really made a positive difference for children , parents and the people with whom she worked.

To Capt Dave & the McManus Family:
My wife and I were deeply saddened at the news of Kay’s home going. We knew of her health issues, so we prayed for her every day and we were encouraged by good reports. Though we were separated by hundreds of miles, we still felt close to her because she was just that kind of person. Kay never complained about anything and she always kept everything positive, even when they weren’t.
When we met Dave and Kay, who were neighbors of my wife’s sister Crystal and brother-in-law, Doug Sharp, we immediately became friends. As a retired sailor I had an extra special bond to the Mintons who often shared with us their Navy-life experiences.
During our visits to Olympia, we shared good times, dining with the Mintons and Sharps at the Hearthfire Grill, or having a glass of wine at the Sharp’s home where the ladies sang their favorite “oldies” while Doug played guitar. We shared the stories of family and friends and we enjoyed laughing at the funny things that happen in life, especially their adventures on the Gryphon!
The last time I saw Kay, Tammy and I hugged her and said our good-byes, knowing that we would probably not see her again this side of heaven. My final words to Kay were simple: Kay, if I don’t see you here, I’ll see you “over there.” She agreed and reaffirmed her faith in Jesus. And that, dear ones, is what I cling to. You all have precious and cherished memories of Kay as wife, mother, grandmother and friend, but the one I cherish most is knowing of her enduring faith – saving faith.
Our thoughts and prayers will continue for Kay’s family and for you, Dave as you all mourn your loss. We try to speak words of comfort, but our words cannot diminish your grief. Only God can bring peace and comfort to the heart.
May God bless you now and always,
Bernie & Tammy VanderSchuur
