Obituary of Richard Lee Carlson

Richard Lee Carlson passed away February 4, 2023, in Centralia, Washington.  He was the youngest of three children born to William and Ruth (McVay) Carlson on December 20, 1949, in Bellingham, Washington.  He grew up in Tacoma, Washington, and resided in Rochester, Washington, for over 20 years.

Richard was a longtime antique/secondhand dealer, auctioneer, and owner of “Rick’s Relics” at Yard Birds in Chehalis, Washington, until Yard Birds closed in 2020.  Previously, he was the owner of “Lucky Dog” in Tacoma and also was an auctioneer at Johnny’s Auction in Rochester.

Richard loved the thrill of the hunt for antiques and collectables to resell.  He collected old metal dogs, old marbles and knives, and was continually on the hunt for “the great find.”  He was well known in the antiques industry and had many friends and colleagues in the secondhand community.

Richard was a happy and humorous man, a vivid storyteller, and someone who saw joy in everything.  He could re-purpose items and turn old things into something new and usable.  He also was an excellent pool player.  Everyone wanted him on their team because he was so much fun, as well as being good.

He is survived by the love of his life and partner, Diane Abbott of Rochester; sisters, Ruedie Sharpe of Lakewood, Washington, and Vickie McDaneld of Ventura, California; and several nieces and nephews.  His parents predeceased him.
