Verl Rogers

Obituary of Verl Rogers

Verl Rogers, of Lacey, Washington, passed away March 1, 2023, at the age of 96.  He grew up in Wenatchee, Washington, graduated from high school in 1946 and joined the U.S. Navy.  Verl won a Pepsi Cola four-year college scholarship and graduated from Whitman College in 1950.

After graduation, he worked for the Boy Scouts, then insurance companies, and lastly found his career in the Social Security Administration.

Verl loved being out in nature.  Mountaineering was a passion.  He climbed over 50 mountains and peaks, starting at age 10.  At age 25, he was in the group to make the first ascent of 14,070-foot Mt. Augusta in Alaska. He was fond of downhill skiing in his younger years, followed by cross country skiing and snowshoeing up to the age of 86.

He enjoyed 58 years of a loving marriage with Janet, who preceded him in death.  They had two daughters:  Susan who also preceded him in death, and Nancy.  Verl is also survived by three grandchildren: Craig, Kelly, and Lisa.  He also is survived by one great-granddaughter, Caleigh.

Verl strived to look for good within the bad and tried to remind folks of a bit of humor every day with his "joke of the day.”  In recent years, he joined a writer's class and wrote weekly essays.  He suggested this quip for his headstone:

Deep beneath this stone lie hid

the ashes of writer Verl Rogers.

Rest in peace.  May he sleep

as soundly as his readers did!
