Obituary of Florence Marie Winbeckler

It is with a heavy heart that we announce our beloved mother and grandmother, Florence “Flo” Marie Winbeckler, 85, of Olympia, Washington, passed away on October 4, 2022.

Born March 15, 1937, in Carrolls, Washington, to Elosia Mae Lanphear and Merton Douglas Backman, Flo was the fifth of six children.  She married Allen Morton in September 1954.  They had two sons, Douglas and Dennis, and one daughter, Annette. They moved to Olympia in 1969. Although they divorced, Allen remained an important part of her life until her final days.

Florence carried a variety of jobs throughout her years. Many of her stories contained memories of waitressing at the Tyee. Florence retired from Scholastic Distribution Center.

She was well known for her love of card games. Her family affectionately warned newcomers to “Skip Flo!” whenever playing Phase 10.  Flo played Pinochle regularly at the VFW and Lacey Community Center, while also staying active with the Lacey Women’s Club.  She loved doing puzzles and challenging herself with Sudoku and Code Words. She enjoyed listening to old hymns and was faithful in reading the Bible daily.

Florence had a great sense of humor.  She was able to laugh at herself. She will be remembered for her incredible strength and her unconditional love of her family.

She was predeceased by her parents; son, Dennis “Denny” Lee Morton; and siblings, Wanda Stehmen, Charles Backman, and Elbert Backman.

Florence is survived by her ex-husband, Allen Morton (Sharon); son, Doug Morton (Deb); daughter, Annette Hampson; siblings, Donna Blaine (Clarence) and Dorothy Kocker (John); five grandchildren, Tiffany Morton, Matt Morton (Dawn), Vanessa Morton, Elysha Peters (Frankie), and Gabrielle Pacheco (Evan); 14 great-grandchildren, Chandler, Jesse, Kaden, Kiara, Jaiden, Chloe, Ashton, Kameron, Kaysen, Braden, Madison, Lochlen, Maverick, and Baker; one great-great-grandchild, Addilynn; as well as many more cherished friends and family members.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 12, 2022, 1:00 p.m. at Olympia-Lacey Church of God.  Come ready to share a special memory of Flo.
