So many memories with Gene and his whole family and many of them life changing. Gene was the first person I met going into my career in education. He and the principal of the high school met me and another prospective teacher from CWSU at the local bakery in Stevenson, WA after a long bus ride to go to an interview. We both got jobs and the rest is history. Then Chuck & I were married and he was hired by Gene to teach in the elementary school while I was teaching at the high school. Living in a small town we became fast friends with Gene’s whole family.
Between the both of us we had all of his ten children in our classes. Then the family moved to Olympia and we stopped by to visit one August. Gene asked Chuck what qualifications he had to be a librarian. Chuck replied: “I have a library card.” He did get the librarian job at Washington Middle School in Olympia as well as his library certification. Again the rest is history.
Try to name a special memory is difficult because they were all so special. You see the Kernan family became a “ second” family to us. With love, Diane & Chuck Waiste

Dear Kernans,
I always liked, enjoyed and respected Gene. He had a wonderful wit. He'd slip in quiet comments that were often hilarious.
I knew Gene as the husband of member of my staff, as a fellow softball player, at the principal of the middle school my kids attended, as a candidate for the legislature, at the father of terrific children and as an all around good, fun guy.
Who can forget that fateful day of August 25, 1983, when coach Gene led the Kernan family to a dramatic victory over the Mighty Audballs?
He loved his wonderful family. He loved baseball, He loved teaching kids. We all loved him.

I have so many great memories of Gene Sr. As a next door neighbor in my youth, I spent a lot of time watching ball games at the Kernan house with Gene, wife Alice and some of the kids. Gene was great because he would always share little details about the sport we were watching, he was a walking library. Of course always with a dry sense of humor. I had the opportunity to talk a lot one-on-one with Gene and he was always willing to talk on your level. Sports, news, education, history or just telling jokes and funny stories. Great company and a wonderfully positive influence for the next door neighbor kid. Over the years, I would see Gene occasionally and he would look me in the eye with a warm grin and say, "staying out of trouble?", and then he would chuckle. Great guy. Rest in peace, Gene.
I offer sincere condolences to the Kernan family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Gene was the principal that I remember the most in my early years of teaching at WMS. His greeting of "Keep the Faith" spoke volumes to me as it said "Keep doing what you're doing, hang in there, carry on, etc". I kept that with me throughout my career into 5 other school buildings before I retired in 2013. It was a pleasure to work for Gene and to have a few of his children in my classes. Gene had a life well lived! May he rest in peace in the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ.

I've known the Kerman family since I was a kid at McKinley Elementary in the early 70's. Spent a lot of time at their house playing hoops and whiffle ball. Great memories and fun times. My sincere condolences to the entire family.
Mr. Kerman was a gem of a man. RIP.
