What a good guy. I am so sorry for your loss.
I knew George only professionally, but that was sufficient to see the quality of the man, not only his professional skills, which were many and varied. I served on the Olympia School Board during the 1980s, when George was “the man” to us board members, as the district was growing, and George was in charge. Always a straightshooter. His word was golden. His knowledge was expansive. His advice unquestioned. And that twinkle, that smile, straight out of central casting. George made us all better, individually and as a district. And while i share in your loss, please know how many - kids and adults - in this community benefited from the efforts of George Barney. What a good guy.

I offer my sincere condolences to Marilyn and the family of George Barney.
I had the privilege of working with George at Jefferson and at OSD central office cabinet. Always, George was kind, considerate, and well prepared for the tasks at hand. He had a great sense of humor and was always fun to be around. Because of George, buildings, both currently in operation, and planned for building in the future, were well maintained and responded to the needs of the school and the community. He was a consummate professional, and a well regarded colleague. I am so glad to have known and worked with him. Sincerely, Patricia Krueger

I taught with George at Jefferson Junior High for several years. The only memories I have to share are about how kind, friendly and helpful he was. He was easily the most respected teacher at Jefferson, both for his teaching and for his kindness to fellow faculty. I suspect it was his abilities in construction and his calm demeanor that caused him to be hired by the district to run the construction and maintenance programs.
One story I remember is how he caught fish on Summit Lake without using bait on the hooks. Apparently he was with his son, Mark, and the fish were hitting the shine of the hook. I could never get them to do that.
