I met Mr. Springer in 1966 as a wide eyed first grader. I remember him standing outside as we all arrived on that first day. Always loved him as a student and later in life when I got chances to go fishing with him and my Dad. I did receive TWO hacks from him, but well deserved :)
Gonna miss his handsome smile!

I came to Toledo in 1991 as a "commuting" teacher from Olympia. Gary had retired by then but I always felt I knew him from all that everyone said about him. He was so highly regarded and his essence seemed present in the halls of all three school buildings. I'm sad to hear of his passing. I wish his family well and know that he will continue to be remembered by so many who knew him, both professionally and personally.

What a wonderful man. Regardless of if school was in session or we were out for the summer Mr. Springer was as willing to pull a tooth. I think he must have pulled every single one of them. I remember my mom driving me to his house to get a toothy pulled. I’ll always remember his sweet smile & kind heart.

Chris Rust posted a condolence

From the time I arrived in Toledo, Gary was always a positive and helpful supporter. Along with Tom Lahmann, Denny Clark, Carl Maw and Mick Filla, Gary was part of the "Kitchen Cabinet"- always willing to help me understand and provide encouragement and counsel.
I pass Gary's house on my way home each day and I like to give he and Marge a quick "honk" to tell them I'm thinking about them. Springer's Corner will be quieter now. I'm sad that a planned tour of the new high school for Gary won't be able to take place. He was such an incredible supporter of all of us in education. I will miss him so much.
On behalf of all of us at Toledo School District, we wish Gary's family comfort in their grief and hope for days ahead when that sorrow can be replaced with comforting memories of a man who gave so much to others in his life.
Sincerely,
Chris Rust
