My Mom, Betty Louise was the most intelligent, courageous, crazy, and creative person I ever knew. She was only 5' 4" but she towered over everybody. No challenge deterred her. She was always up for adventure.
Our family was living in El Paso Texas when I was in the second grade. It was fall and the day was Halloween. Children were enthusiastic about the upcoming "trick or treat". At school, we were happy because we got to wear our costumes all day. To make the day even more special, each homeroom had a party. We got back from lunch and the homeroom mothers started marching in with chocolate and vanilla cupcakes and cherry Kool Aide. We were almost done munching the sweets when the teacher said, "In minutes we are going to have a visitor and the visitor is coming down from the sky right out the window". The teacher took the classroom broom and tapped three times on the ceiling with the handle. All of a sudden, a huge black ball flew down from the roof (which was at least 10 feet over our heads). She landed face down in a cloud of dust. She stood up, brushed herself off, and the dust subsided. It was a dust ball witch! And after that landing, she still had her hat on her head and white high heels on her feet. (Witch flying wasn't as easy as she thought it was) She had a pillowcase full of candy. The teacher let us go outside and meet her. Most of the kids were not afraid but I was terrified. Her nose was green like pea soup and halfway off her face. Somehow, she looked vaguely familiar but I didn't know any witches. She offered me some candy and I took a Tootsie Roll. When it was her time to go, she strolled down the hall past the first graders, through the kindergarten rooms and out the door. When she left, there were sprinkles of light in the dust.
It was a long time before I figured out who that witch was!

I knew Betty 50 years, 15 as her son-in-law. The first time we met, she told me a joke. I still remember it. She always had something to say. More often than not, it was hilarious. I have two regrets: 1. Never getting a copy of her fried chicken recipe. 2. Never recording her rendition of Archibald S Holbrook. Undoubtedly, she is standing at St Peter's gate right now and he is doubled over with laughter. Rest in peace, Betty. We love you.
