Iris Green

Obituary of Iris Ann Green

Iris Ann Green, 74, recently of Centralia, Washington, died of natural causes on September 6, 2021, in Olympia, Washington.

Iris was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 6, 1947, to Felix B. Green and Wilma Dorris (Bailey) Green. Her family moved to Centralia in 1954, where she attended school from the second grade through her junior year in high school. She graduated from Meadowdale High School in 1965, and from the University of Washington in 1969 with a degree in Spanish.

Iris taught Spanish at Timberline High School in Olympia from 1970 to 1977.  She worked in retail jewelry and antiques until 1984, when she was employed as a financial worker at the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Community Services Office on Capital Hill in Seattle. She served DSHS in various classifications and in various locations throughout the state until she retired from her position as Supervisor of the Constituent Relations Section in Olympia in 2008.

Iris lived with a pervading sense of enjoyment.  She traveled widely within and outside the country. Her first of many trips abroad was to Spain aboard a merchant ship. She wrote poetry, made jewelry, collected art and antiques, and regularly attended theatrical productions.

Iris made friends wherever she lived or worked and kept them for her lifetime. She was a voice for the unseen and under-served. Iris would not suffer pronouncements of the pompous without comment.

Iris is survived by her two brothers and their spouses, Ben Green and Carol Bowman of Wenatchee, Washington, and William Green and Cara Leslie of Olympia. She is also survived by one niece, Tirza Green and spouse, Jody Smith of Wenatchee; three nephews, Tyler Green of Prague, Mark Green and spouse Katie Green of Puyallup, Washington, and Sam Green and spouse Claire Green of Olympia; three great-nieces, Sofie Green, Hazel Green, Ella Green; and great-nephew, Felix Green. Iris was predeceased by her father, Felix Green (d.1996); mother, Wilma Dorris Green (d. 2007); and sister-in-law, Judith Green (d. 2001).

The family is planning no memorial service at this time; however, the various circles of friends of which Iris was a part are encouraged to honor her memory as they choose.

Donations may be given to your local agencies that provide food and shelter. She would also be happy if you plant flowers.
