Obituary of Edith Marie DuVall

Edith Marie “Edie” DuVall passed away May 2, 2021, in Olympia, Washington.  She was born January 12, 1944, to Herbert Hendry and Velma Gephardt Hendry in Los Angeles, California.  Edith had lived in Washington since 1962.  Prior to that, she lived with family in McGregor, Minnesota.  She had three years of high school in Manila, Philippines, and finished at Olympia High School, graduating with the Class of 1962.

Professionally, Edith was an Employment Specialist with the Employment Security Department in Olympia, from which she retired. She was married to Darrell Lay for 42 years, before cancer took his life.

She then met and married David DuVall.  They spent every moment of their 17 wonderful retirement years together, enjoying long drives, dining out, holding hands, and seeing and enjoying the beauty of the great United States.  They honestly admitted theirs was a marriage so beautiful and loving that they had been placed together by God.

Edith asked for nothing and gave everything to those in need.  When asked if there was something she needed, she would reply, “Don’t get me anything pink.  I ain’t no pink girl; I’m a country girl.”  Edith was a fighter and survivor, always trusting in her strengths and her faith in the Lord.  She loved and held close to her heart her family and friends.  Her family wishes to thank all of you for your prayers and support during her recent illness.

She is survived by her loving husband, David DuVall; son, Darren Lay of Lacey, Washington; stepsons, Robert DuVall of Olympia, Daniel DuVall of Olympia, and David M. DuVall of Issaquah, Washington; daughter, Loretta Lay of Olympia; stepdaughter, Marlene Ostlund of Olympia; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; stepmother, Julie Hendry of Florida; and sisters, Gay Blunt of Jerome, Idaho, and Angela Hendry of Florida.  She was predeceased by her parents; and brothers, Gary Hendry and Gordon Youngblood.

There will be a graveside service on Friday, May 21, 2021,2:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery, in Tumwater, Washington.  Friends and family are welcome to attend. There will be a celebration of life for Edith at some future date.
