Charles Hendricksen

Obituary of Charles Sverre Hendricksen

Charles Sverre Hendricksen was born in Portland, Oregon, and spent some of his youth living in Cathlamet, Washington, when he wasn’t accompanying his father and mother to Army-Air Force bases around the United States. After WWII, he lived for a time in each of Germany, France and Japan, again with his parents, Ralph and Lucille Hendricksen, and younger sister, Jean Wears. He liked to say that he spent time in at least 22 schools as he grew up.

Charles was also a member of MENSA for several years in his early 20s.

Travel and constantly making new friends did not dim his love of learning. During his working career, Charles took one or more classes each quarter until 20 years had passed and he had accumulated 256 credit hours and decided to get his BA degree so he could go on for an advanced degree. Charles earned an MA in Software Engineering from Seattle University and an MA and PhD from the University of Washington’s College of Arts and Sciences in Geography. His dissertation was titled, “The Research Web: Asynchronous Collaboration in Social Scientific Research.”

He loved hiking on Mt. Rainier with Grand Park being a favorite destination. He went mushrooming on many of these hikes. He loved trees, especially cedars, hemlock and even the lowly vine maple. He spent the last years of his life on a small farm outside Chehalis, Washington, surrounded by cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and green pastures.

Charles was 82 years old when he died of metastatic cancer on March 2, 2021.  He is survived by his wife, Laura C. Larsson; and sister, Jean Wears.
