Obituary of Phillip Richard Milholland
Phillip Richard Milholland passed away on February 18, 2021, just hours short of his 96th birthday. A long-time Olympia resident, Phil had moved to California during his last few years to live with his son. Phil will be laid to rest at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington, on March 3, 2021.
Phil grew up and attended school in Olympia. He met his future bride, Isabelle, when he was just five years old, playing together with her while both their parents picked berries at the local berry farm. Phil and Isabelle were engaged as the country entered World War II. Phil joined the U.S. Army, and served in Europe. During the war, Phil was wounded in combat and was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return, Phil and Isabelle wed.
Phil enjoyed woodworking, especially in driftwood, and was known for his artistic flair and whimsical creations. He spent most of his working years building custom homes in the Olympia area with the AB Cuda Construction Co. He enjoyed gospel music and was known for his yodeling and animated storytelling. In their later years, Phil and Isabelle spent many winters in Hawaii, always on the lookout for a seabird, turtle or breaching whale. Boats and beaches were his solace.
Phil was preceded in death by his wife, Isabelle; and son, James Theodore. He is survived by four children, Beverly (Dan) Goercke, Sharon (Dave) Travis, Delbert (Cindy) Milholland and Bryant (Betty) Milholland; 12 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
