So many many memories of Uncle Conlon, but among my most favored are the small moments. Sharing our morning routines meant we discovered our mutual enjoyment of baking. Uncle Conlon and I both bake between adoration and the busy mornings. We both would make bread, rolls and let them rise while we were at church. He taught me about slow rise (keep the bread in the refrigerator overnight) and that you can freeze dough - many times it is better for it.
He encouraged my son Ian to memorize and appreciate poetry. I loved watching dueling poets! He encouraged reading and could always find the right reference material. His calmness and patience seemed legendary to me - once (unnamed) cousins and I "borrowed" his small car and promptly curbed it. He came, organized lifting the car off the curb. Smiled so sweetly while he got into the car and drove it away - leaving us to walk home, pondering the error of our ways.
He was a wonderful uncle. A true gentleman.
And....my mothers favorite brother in law.
