Hazel was always a very active member of the United Methodist Women. She held many different offices. She was truly missed at Haller Lake UMC when they moved to Olympia.

I first met Hazel and Keith in 1994 when I took over the daily Seattle Times delivery route, including that cozy little house on Penny Lane with the beautiful flowers, well-kept lawn, and magical hand-carved wooden spinners hanging from the front eaves. I loved hearing their stories of the early days on Penny Lane – the dirt road that ended in a pond at the bottom of the street, the trek their girls made “through the woods” to school, and watching Lynnwood grow into a “real” city. Hazel and I made a special connection when I discovered that she had been one of the first PTA officers at our local school, Lynndale Elementary, back when it first opened in 1957. My own four kids attended there, and being a PTA person myself, it wasn’t long before Hazel’s stories inspired us to plan a “40th Birthday Celebration,” bringing together current and former families, many of whom still lived locally. We even managed to get EVERY former principal – 8 individuals over 40 years, and from as far away as Alaska! – to attend the all-community celebration on September 21, 1997. Hazel didn’t stop there, though – she became one of the founding members of the Lynndale FAN Club, a group of mostly retired neighbors dedicating themselves to Fulfilling Academic Needs at Lynndale by volunteering regularly as tutors, reading buddies, mentors, and classroom helpers. That group was awarded the JC Penney Golden Service Award in 1999, and was still going strong when our youngest left Lynndale in 2001. Regretfully, though, I did lose touch with Hazel and Keith as my kids moved on to high school and college. But every time I drive past Penny Lane, I think of Hazel and Keith, and the legacy of caring, kindness and community they lived so beautifully. Sending love and thanks to Keith and to the family for sharing so much over the years. Hazel will live on in the many lives she touched, especially mine. Chris Kratz, Lynnwood
