John, and to his lovely family!
He was a totally sweet guy in school to have around.
After graduation we go our own ways. When I am age 53 same as him we ran into each other again. He is with Chris Jones we all exchange hugs with one another they order and eat and we have small chit chat.
John was concerned that he had never seen me at any class reunions as I had moved to live in Philippines.
Him and Chris would eat lunch often at our families business. He let me know about a class reunion and both him and Chris Jones asked me many times to attend. I did so and found out that him and I were the only ones drinking water out of everyone else during the reunion.
A few weeks later he showed up in his new orange colored jeep!
Bringing his parents with him so I carried their orders out to them.
John was a class act kid and friend in school and a class act adult role model!
He will be greatly missed by so many of us!
Condolences to his entire family circle!
God Bless you all!
Sincerely,
Priscilla Richards

My friend, not a day goes by when I do not feel your presence around me and not a moment goes by when I don’t think of you. You were the person Brad was supposed to call to determine if pulling the plug on me would be the best decision when I would not be able to make that decision as there was no one else I trusted more to make that call as a physician; you taught me what fatherhood was all about, how to secure the academic future for Aldin and Bria, how to prepare for the pandemic. You taught me how every day can be a fun scientific experiment and you always inspired me to be a better parent, better son, a better brother and a better husband. Everywhere I look around, I find a reminder of you from my keychain to the skis in the garage you gave me on the day I met you for the first time to the disaster food (4 tubs of it) and the expired supply of tamiflu bought when you thought that “swine flu” would get us all (it didn’t and I bet you are having the last laugh from up there). There are things I never told you and now I never will be able to. There never was anyone like you and there never will be. I miss you my friend and I hope you get your much needed rest now. You will continue to guide me even though you are not around. May you rest forever in peace. Sally, Carter, Kady and Sarah you are family to us and you will always be in our prayers.

John was an incredible MD as well as a wonderful human being. I was there the day he handed over his keys to strangers who had no car to go see their friend who was an being airlifted to Harborview after a car accident. His kindness was immeasurable. Then his wonderful wife Sally, came to pick him up after his shift was over; a wonderful, loving couple. I worked closely with John as an RN in the ER and was always impressed how he passed no judgment on anyone and helped so many patients and coworkers, not to forget what a very intelligent man he was.If you ever had a question, he could always come up with an answer.
When my Father died in 2008 I went home to a very small Catholic Church in Wea, Kansas for his funeral. After the Mass, the priest came to me and asked who I was and did I know this guy, John Hautala, who had just sent donations to the church in my Father's name. I was amazed at his kindness and caring and will never forget all the kind acts he did. The stories could go on and on about his kindness and compassion for all. I am missing his so much! I was blessed to know him and love him. Love to his family and all those whose lives were touched by John.

I knew John well in medical school, we actually lived together for a couple of years. He was an overindulgent co parent of my dog who adored him. What a sweet, kind and gentle man. My heart breaks as I write this. My profound sympathies to his family. Eric Heegaard

Working with John was a gift and priceless for me. He also cared for our child and diagnosed her early which prevented a dire outcome. John and I shared similar views in medicine and his input helped reshape some of my patient care
The passing of this great human is like a pebble being dropped into a pond and the ripples touching each part of the shore as he touched each part of our hearts.

Oh my...I remember Dr. H being the receiving physician in the ER at MGH so many years ago (2006/2007) when I worked in Mason County.
He was ALWAYS a "down to earth" guy....never felt anything but mutually professional respect from him.
Dang it....we've lost a GOOD Man!
My sincerest condolences and prayers for strength and warmest memories to the family.
Doc...rest easy....we'll take it from here.

So many memories dating back to 1989 when we often sat in the same row for the first two years of medical school lectures, Mountain Dews and Snickers bars were always present. Watching Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country on LaserDisc with my husband Glenn and classmate Walter (I think?) in his basement unit of the Fremont house, noticing at least 12 HUGE spiders under and on his bed - "they don't bother me" (as I was freaking out). John was one of six med school classmates attending our wedding in 1991 at The Sorrento Hotel. Meeting Sally and baby Cady at our daughter Jennifer's 3rd birthday party in Magnolia, Seattle - John so sweet with all the little kids. Visiting the Shelton house, admiring the home movie theater above the garage (Sally's future sewing room) and the automated bedroom blackout curtains for daytime sleeping. One of those visits he didn't tell us he was dog-sitting an Irish wolfhound, so when we pulled up in the driveway it was a bit of a shock to see this massive hound higher than head-level while seated at the wheel of my G20.
Sally, I am sending my love to you and to John's family and relatives. He is missed. Please enjoy this picture of my November 16, 1991 wedding medical school group L to R, rear: me, Alison (Lytle) Perrin, Michelle Plorde, Jill Sells; L to R front: Josh Plorde, Scott Heflick, and John.
Love, Susan Baumgaertel, Glenn Osako & Jennifer Osako.

John touched so many lives in the ER. Working in social services supporting our homeless neighbors many times in the ER many remember John as one of the compassionate who took the time to listen to them. His heart was huge. God bless his ministry of healing. Rest in peace dear one.

Dr. Hautala always made our family's visits to the ER as comfortable as possible. He was watchful and listened to his patients. I was also lucky to work at his hospital and greatly admired the very team he was an integral part of. My condolences to his brother Jason and all the family, co-workers and friends. Dr. Hautala is missed, indeed.

John was a good and trusted friend, and a valued mentor -- basically the older brother I never had. I will miss him forever.

I worked with John for only a short time. However it took only one meeting with him for me to know he was a good man. John's expertise was worthy of respect but more importantly his kindness was worth emulating. He not only left a professional impact but a very positive personal one as well. I am saddened to hear of his passing and his family will be in my prayers. Thank you John for your kindness when it counted the most. I will always appreciate you.
