Obituary of John Philip Haws

Dr. John Philip Haws

“Jay”

On Monday, August 10, 2020, John Philip Haws, loving husband and father of seven children, passed away at age 85. John, known as Jay, was born March 24, 1935 and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, to parents John and Margaret.  He attended McDonogh for middle and high school and went to Princeton University where he studied History and Religion. From there, he went on to the University of Maryland for Medical School and completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences, with his final year as Chief Resident.  He then served as Assistant Chief of Psychiatry in the U.S. Public Health Service in Fort Worth, Texas.

Jay moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he opened a private practice.  During his time in Boulder, he was the Medical Director of the Mental Health Center of Boulder County, Clinical Director for Substance Abuse Services at Boulder Psychiatric Institute and Medical Director for Men’s and Women’s Recovery Programs. Jay also worked with the Montrose Memorial Hospital Psychiatric Care Center. In 2000, he moved to Olympia, Washington, and served as staff psychiatrist at Providence St. Peter Hospital.  He shifted back to private practice in 2013, where he just recently ended a career of 53 years.

Jay was a collegiate athlete in both lacrosse and rugby. He was a founding member of multiple club teams in both Maryland and Colorado. He was an outdoor enthusiast, a lover of sports, films, books, animals, Pink Floyd and was obsessed with the colors orange and black.

Dr. Haws was known for his humor, his kindness and compassion for his patients.   He was greatly respected and admired by his colleagues, friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deborah. His seven children, Charley, Annie, Matt, Jason, Kaitlin, Alexis and Sam. Fourteen grandchildren. Beloved brother, Jim.

“And now, the end is near. And so I face the final curtain.  My friends I’ll say it clear, I’ll state my case of which I’m certain. I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and every highway.  But more, much more than this, I did it my way.” --Paul Anka

A private service with family and friends will be held in Boulder, Colorado at a later date.
