To Marita Herrera's family--I just learned of Marita's death through the St. Placid's newsletter. My sincere condolences to you all. Marita and Rene were good friends of my parents, Paul & Jeanne Rensel, who lived just a couple of blocks away. I remember Marita coming over and playing our piano. (See photo.) When they first moved to Olympia, Marita taught us Spanish at St. Mike’s School. At our wedding reception in 1985, when he met my husband Alan, Rene said to him, “You’re almost as handsome as a Cuban!” And a few years later (1992?), when Alan was teaching in London on a semester abroad program and Mom had come to stay with us for 2 weeks—we were out walking across the Blackfriars bridge over the Thames and who should we run into but Rene & Marita! What fun to be able to have them over to our little apartment for tea! All sweet memories... I know you must keep them both in your hearts and find peace in reflecting on all the good from their lives. With love & prayers, Jan Rensel

Querida família Herrera y Capestany, I am blessed and humbled by the fact that Marita, Renee, and children and beyond entered my life. Marita was my spanish teacher in college and I Eliana was a colleague teacher in high school. Renee was well known to me and many in Olympia too. What a duet they were. What wonderful kids and grandkids I got to know, teach, work with, and more. Since college I’ve been lucky to attend a small conversation group for years in Marita and Renee’s home, getting to see them weekly. When Renee aged and departed this world, it was so nice to help Marita cope by embracing her wit, humor, music and language skills in our small group. We all said she was so sharp, so wise, and so funny. And that smile was/is endearing still; thanks for the photos, family. She would play songs for our spanish group on the living room piano, and could play 100 tunes from memory; so gifted. Once in a while family members would drop by the house; nice folks all and an honor and pleasure to chat with you; she was so proud of all her family, including nietos y bisnietos....todos. Sadly you all had to move her to assisted living, but it was needed. Loved watching her play piano for the residents. Lunches with her and continued small group spanish in her room were highlights of the recent past and shall bring a smile to me for a long time. She even made sure there were treats to share for us guests :-) Her memory and her influence shall be with me always. I’ll treasure the conversations we had about politics, teaching, and the shared stories about Cuba, especially after I visited there and passed through her old ‘hood (La Vibora). I learned so much from her about languages, life, and how to live a good life. She, and Renee, are exemplars of a life well-lived, with purpose, with giving of your talents to help others, with a legacy of a wonderful family that echoes the traits and values they sought in their descendants. I send a yellow rose to your memory, Marita. I’m sure you’re giving piano and spanish (and french) lessons to your fellow angels. You may have moved to another location, but you’re just as alive in this man’s heart and memory. Gracias por ser un parte de mi vida. Give a hug to Renee for me and enjoy the reunion with other Herreras and Capestanys that awaited you.

Marita was quite an inspiration for me. I participated in a Bible study with Rene and Marita at St Michael Parish for many years. I learned a lot from their knowledge Catholic faith and in the life experiences they shared with us. Together, Rene and Marita were great role models as a married couple. I will remember Marita‘s beautiful smile, openness to share her Catholic faith and her willingness to work for change to make the world a better place for all. God bless you and rest in peace.

Such fond memories of Señora Herrera, as my Spanish teacher and friend, because of her, I went to the University of Iteso in Guadalajara, Mexico and lived with a family for a few months, which had such a great impact on my life. I went to WSU and received my B.A. degree in Spanish language and literature. We also both shared a love of music. Muchisimas gracias, Marita, poor todos!
