I was one of the original 5 orchestra students when Ian first came to North Thurston. He fostered us from a small ensemble to a full-fledged orchestra and led us to many awards and successes in music and life. I have many fond memories of him and that group. He encouraged a life-long love of music. He was a dedicated professional, a mentor and all-around great guy. I'm sorry I just found this sad news. Sincere condolences to Marj and the family. Nancy Cunningham Miller, NTHS class of '68.

I was a student under Mr. Edlund from the 5th grade through graduation from North Thurston High School. He instilled a lifelong love of music in me, and I have a particular fondness for baroque music. To this day, I appreciate his carefully organized orchestra tours, and I am thankful for the experience of playing in his orchestra. Mrs. Edlund, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May the God of all comfort wrap you in His arms and console you. Theresa Allen, NTHS '83.

I had the privilege to have been at North Thurston high school one of the best orchestra conductors around this area. He was very particular about the orchestral pieces that he chose for us to play. He was very dedicated to his students and took extra practice times monthly before school started and yes it was true that all of us were tired. He did care for us after all. It is sad because now almost all of my Orchestra conductors are gone. I am happy that he had a full and wonderful life. I am so sorry that he was diagnosed with the type of disease he had and I know that he must have fought long and hard. God bless you Mr. Edland. May God be with your dear family, friends, and former orchestra students. Diane Lehmann. Class of 1994 NT High.

I met Mr. Edlund in 1965, when I was a fifth grader at Mt. View Elementary School. My mom and dad rented a violin for me and Mr. Edlund taught me to play it. We practiced in the hallway by the office as there wasn’t an empty room for us to use. For every year from 1965 until 1981, at least one of the kids in my family was taking classes from Mr. Edlund at Mt.View, or Chinook, or North Thurston. I have many good memories of all that I learned in orchestra and all that he taught us. I learned how important it is to have music in public schools. He had high standards and was tough on us and we responded. He and his wife were our friends. Thinking of you, Mrs. Edlund.
