The world indeed lost a good man the day Dick was called home. I worked with Dick (Alfalfa, I’ll explain later) starting in 99. I learned really fast what a jokester he could be. He was always smiling & was never too busy to stop & help or talk to a student. His trash cart had motorcycle handlebars, bells, horns, & usually was decorated for the holidays. He could always be counted on for his creativity when it came to decorating the stage for the many performances.
He was our Zero the Hero! He would change clothes midday to adorn himself in short colorful pants, funny shoes, cape & hat all of which he created & let’s not forget the funny glasses with the big nose & a different colored mustache he wore to try to fool the kids on his identity. To get back at the jokester, staff was known to hide his clothes or tie his shoe laces together in an effort to keep him in costume for the rest of the day. We had a lot of fun when he was around.
On the day we were all given walki-talkies to communicate, he came to me & said “I don’t want to hear Office to Dick, I want to be called Alpha,” I laughed hysterically at his seriousness & said no way you are more like Alfalfa. He loved it & it stuck. Didn’t take long & he’d reply to radio calls with “I’m on it Darla.” One of my fondest memories is we were having a potluck & he asked me “What are you bringing Osgood?” And I would tell him, I would ask him what he was bringing, “oh it’s a surprise.” He would have his fancy 12 grain bread lathered with peanut butter & raspberry freezer jam sliced up into bite size pieces on a fancy plate. He called them slabettes-everyone loved them. After that on any given morning you could stop by the faculty lounge & find slabettes for a snack-they were yummy.
Sometimes we get lucky enough to meet a special person who leave foot prints on our hearts. This man left 100’s of 1000s of foot prints on students & staff at Meadows Elementary. Every morning I would hear “Mornin’ Glory!” Over the years he shared photos of family events -his kids getting married, grandkids being born, etc & I would always tell him what a blessed man he was. He would always reply “Don’t I know it.”
I will treasure all the stories & laughter! And I’ll bet he has his own show in heaven because we all know he has plenty of material to keep them all laughing!
To his family, may the memories & love you shared bring peace to your hearts. My thoughts, prayers & love are with you.
Lori Osgood

I can't say I knew Dick that well. Our paths crossed occasionally during "the Willows years" . The first time we met I think we knew we were kindred spirits and I know that every time our paths crossed, I was happy to see him, enjoyed his company, and left feeling good. He was an interesting person, he was a good person, and I'm sure the world is a better place for the karma he leaves behind. Wish we could have attended a Grateful Dead concert together!

Years ago, Dick came to my home to help me. I noticed his truck had a Mercedes Benz hood ornament. I said that I didn't know Mercedes Benz made trucks. He said that one of his kids wanted them to have a more up-scale vehicle, so he put that on the hood to make it possible. How funny! Dick did make the world a better place. My prayers go out to Mari and their lovely family.

In my nearly 40 years of teaching in four different states, I have never had a friendship I have valued with a co-worker as much as the one with my friend Dick. I still have the picture of Dick and I, looking at the latest issue of the SI Swim Suit addition in the smoking room at Meadows! I will try to post it up here. And if I ever see "Puss In Boots" in a museum, I will know the artist, the one and only.
My sincerest, and deepest condolences to Mari and the kids. Sending love and positive energy,
Good ol' Mr. (Scott) Wilson (your elementary PE teacher)

Always tried to put aside one day everytime I came to Washington for an ‘adventure day with Dick’ the car would start and you never had a clue what would happen next. But it was always fun with plenty of laughs. I always learned something, something that may or not show up on a game of ‘Trival Pursuit’ (probably not) . Besides hanging out and just enjoying his always good energy one of my favorite things was squeezing through the narrow aisles of his garage looking at all the cool things in his garage and sometimes getting little tidbits of where it came from and what it actually was. One of the coolest people I’ve ever meet and proud to have known him and call him my friend.

Sending my prayers to Mari Knapp and the whole family. Dick was such a great guy. He was so funny and had a great sense of humor. He always had such a positive attitude even in the toughest of times. He was always so kind to Will and our family. He even played a great game of Words with friends. We love to hear him talk about all the birds around their house when we visited. He will be missed by us and many others. Our Thoughts and Prayers to the whole Knapp Clan.

To our brother Dick,
No one made us laugh harder (especially at ourselves) than you. No one made us feel more loved than you. If anyone deserves the title “ One of a kind”, it’s most certainly you. No soul could possibly be more missed than you. No one touched so many peoples hearts or was passionate about so many different things than you. We will see you and hear you in such a wide variety of ways that it boggles the mind to list them. (He would like the word boggles!). No one makes us smile more nor is there anyone we could miss more than you.
We love you and we are confident that the universe is brighter because you are one with it! The sun shines brighter, flamingo shirts and red, white and blue hightop sneakers are in fashion and heaven is simply a more heavenly place because of you.
