Obituary of Edward Lee Peters

Ed passed away on January 14, 2020, in Olympia, Washington, at the age of 87.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Peters; parents, Modest and Dorothy; and son, Michael Acey.  He is survived by his children, Cynde Lund of Bothell, Gary Lund of Seattle, Janice Wrenn (John) of Renton, April Acey of Lacey, and Teri Acey of Federal Way; grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Barbara Peters of Seattle; brother, Don (Marlene) Peters of Spokane; and brother, John Peters of Manson.

Ed was born on January 11, 1933 in Wenatchee, Washington, and grew up in Manson, Washington, where he graduated from high school in 1951.  He spent two years in college at Washington State University, followed by two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.  Returning to WSU after the service, he obtained a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1959.  He worked for Collins Radio Co. in Burbank, California, for a year and then for the Boeing Co. in Seattle until he retired in March 1988.  He and wife, Barbara, then built a house in Manson, and moved there in October 1988.

Ed was a mountain climber and member of the Seattle Mountaineers for many years, serving as chairman of the Climbing Committee, Member of the Board, Vice President, and his proudest accomplishment, Editor of Freedom of the Hills, 4th Edition, published in 1984. Ed enjoyed being part of The Mountaineers and mountain climbing. He also loved talking about his climbs and sharing CDs chock full of climbing pictures. He was also a member of the American Alpine Club.

Ed also was the proverbial rock hound and had many kinds of rocks and minerals from all over Washington and surrounding states.  He and Barb spent at least 14 summers digging sapphires near Helena, Montana, which he then faceted and had made in to jewelry. Ed co-authored and co-published a book for those beginning gemstone faceting; it was entitled The Faceting Handbook and was published in 1985.

Both Ed and Barb were active in genealogy.  In 2013, they were awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the Washington State Genealogy Society for exceptional and consistent support of the goals and operations of the Chelan Valley Genealogy Society.

Ed lived a good, adventurous, interesting life. He was a good husband, father, Papa and friend. He will be missed.
