Obituary of Frederick John Day III

There is a famous photograph of Frederick John Day III as an adolescent, standing in front of a shipping container with a brand new bike and holding a pellet gun whilst smiling ear to ear. The bike and gun were both gifts from his father and new step-mother, given to him to quell the guilt they felt for having him live in the backyard. Yep, when Fred was barely 12, the house had no room for him so he lived in the pictured shipping container in the backyard. Little did they know, but their guilt had given Fred his dream house. He was the envy of every 12-year-old in America, if not the world.

Frederick John Day III passed away January 3, 2020, in the early morning at the age of 94. He was sharp and present until the end, sharing the holidays with family and friends. Fred was a man with boundless curiosity who loved learning and new experiences and who loved debate and conversation. Those who knew him always had a good adversary or companion in curing the ills of the world from an armchair. Whether he was serving as a Los Angeles Police officer for 20 years or a Math teacher at Timberline High School or a Loan officer at OBee Credit Union, Fred was also immersed in one of his many hobbies, which covered the gamut. He loved to travel the world, skin diving, woodworking, built a dark room and taught himself photography. He loved shooting guns, ceramics, beading, camping, collecting coins, playing games, going to the Lucky Eagle Casin, and attending the Board meetings with his dear friends and neighbors, Jerry, Bill and Steve.

Fred was born September 28, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1943 and entered Army Air Force Basic Training at Buckley Field, Colorado. After basic training, Fred became a student Lt. Colonel at "Texas Tech" flight school, where he volunteered to be a lower ball turret gunner on a B17 because it allowed him to smoke cigarettes discretely. As World War II closed, Fred did not see combat and was honorably discharged as corporal from Orlando Army Air Base, Florida in 1946.

In 1946 Fred married Bernice Eloise Nichols. Fred and Eloise “borrowed” a car from Eloise’s parents and they eloped to Quartzsite, Arizona. Jimmy Nichols and Jean Nopson went with them as their witnesses. Fred and Eloise had two children. Karen was born in 1948 and Susan was born in 1949. Eloise was the love of Fred’s life and they remained married until her passing in 2010. The four of them had a great many adventures as a family, recorded on photographic slides which were often shared with family and friends.
