Obituary of Donald John Witt

Donald John Witt, 97, had a stroke and passed away January 1, 2020 in Olympia, Washington, his home since 2012.  He was born March 6, 1922 to William and Dora (Roper) Witt in Lake City, Minnesota.  Over the years, he also lived in McAllen and Mission, Texas; and San Jose, Sacramento, and Alameda, California.

In 1940, Don earned a high school diploma in Lake City, Minnesota.  He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1942 to February 1946 in the Pacific Theater during World War II.  He married Dorothy Ruth Weathers on January 26, 1949, in Alameda, California.

Professionally, Don was a prototype machinist for Aerojet and Varian.  Friends enjoyed being with him.  His smile was infectious.  He loved to climb the farm windmill, and was a very creative problem solver.  He also loved woodworking, and was always building model airplanes or trucks out of wood.  He enjoyed the solitude of working in his shop by himself.  He was fond of saying, “I’ll do it myself.”

Don is survived by sisters, Irene Peper, Shirley Klovsted, Elaine Kaehler and Janice Campe; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Witt.  He was predeceased by his wife; sons, Peter Witt and Gary Witt; parents; sister, Verona Witt Bargsten; and brothers, LaVern Witt and Glen Witt.

Services will be held Friday, February 21, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St., Kent, WA 98042.
