Lylburn was a dear, gentle soul with whom I greatly enjoyed both making music and sharing social time. Bright and sensitive, with a sharp wit that offset his outwardly soft spoken manner, he was a pleasure to know. My heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues. Rest In Peace, dear friend.

I met Lylburn in the weekly Parkinson exercise class. I used to play the clarinet until 3 or 4 years ago until I got Parkinson's. Lylburn said Parkinson's effects the lower lip's ability to play notes correctly. He also encouraged me to continue composing music that comes to me.
I will miss seeing Lylburn in this life. He was a real treasure as a person.

Sometimes we are asked about the teacher that influenced us the most. For me, that teacher is undoubtedly Lylburn Layer. I was fortunate to play the bass in his orchestra and symphonic band my freshman year in high school, when we travelled to Vancouver BC and performed Scenes from the Louvre, Toccata for Band, and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in dm. I also took private clarinet lessons with him. Although he left teaching after that year to become an administrator, he continued to give me clarinet lessons. I didn’t have the best technique, but the most important thing I learned from him was to always play musically. I wanted to be a professional clarinetist, but later was inspired to become a teacher. He told me that to be the best teacher, I should also be the best musician I could be. I went to Northwestern to push myself to do just that. Northwestern took care of my technique, but I always remembered the lessons I learned about playing musically from Mr. Layer.
I just heard from my life long friend, Carrie Layer, that her dad passed away on November 26 at the age of 83. I know that he inspired many others besides me, but he didn’t want a memorial service. Instead, he asked that we pause and listen to our favorite music. As I write this, I am listening to the Mozart clarinet concerto and remembering everything he taught me.
RIP, Maestro.

Mr. Layer is responsible for one of my greatest memories and accomplishments. I started at MIHS the same year as he did. We weren’t much in those days. He introduced marching band, and we did a pretty good Bad New Bears impression. But Mr. Layer believed in us and eventually we believed in ourselves. The success of the program over the years is a great legacy. I was a true band nerd and Mr. Layer was home base.

Oh Melissa, Tom and all the Layer family. I am so sorry to hear of Lylburns passing. After coming from the harsh world of working corporate insurance he was such a refreshing boss and friend. I will always remember him telling me to take a personal day, just take a day off just for you! He was such a kind and gentle soul. How life gets in the way and the years go by and you dont talk to one another, but he was a good friend in those years I was at MIHS and he will always be warmly remembered. My heartfelt condolences to you all.

I was blessed to have Mr. Layer as my wonderful band teacher in high school. Band was such a great experience for me, and I often think about Mr. Layer. He will always be one of my favorite teachers, and one of the reasons I went on to be a music major at UW. Thank you, Mr. Layer!

Mr. Layer was a genuinely wonderful man to everyone who knew him. In addition to joining a family boating vacation to the San Juan Islands, some of my fondest memories were my years in the MIHS band, orchestra, and steel drum band. Thank you for sharing your musical leadership with us, Mr. Layer. You made a difference in so many people’s lives.

Mr Layer was a wonderful and talented musician. I was blessed to have him as my private lesson teacher for several years in the 1970’s. Very patient but firm and improved my saxophone abilities. Remember his home on Queen Anne hill and the studio in the basement. He will be missed

I will always appreciate the way Mr. Layer encouraged me in my pursuit of trumpet at MIHS. At first I was denied the right to play the trumpet, because I was a girl (1977), but Mr. Layer always encouraged me as an individual to do my best. Sending love and prayers to the family and please know he was a huge positive influence in music and life. Andrea (Miller) Holtan

Mr. Layer was a wonderful man, teacher, conductor, and mentor.
He had so many one liners that I will never forget, and continue to live by..."Perfect practice makes perfect performance." "It's just as easy to be five minutes early as it is to be five minutes late." "We are only as strong as our weakest link."
He took us from John Cage's 4'33'' (really gutsy to perform at Contest) to Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (filling up the gym with smoke from the shotgun blasts). We went to Huntington Beach, CA (when Mt. St. Helens blew), and Vancover, Canada to compete, raised money for new uniforms with a jog-a-thon and by selling band candy, and were a part of the Animal Band (changed to "Banned") at the infamous stolen State basketball championship.
Hugs to his son, Paul, who was in the percussion session at MIHS while I was there from 1978 - 1981.
With love,
Linda "Matthew" Sheldone
