Obituary of Carl W. Sampaga

 

Carl W. Sampaga, aka Sam, aka Uncle Sam, passed away on July 11, 2019 in Olympia, Washington. He was born June 30, 1953 to Martin Sampaga and Barbara (Steinhoff) Sampaga in Honolulu, Hawaii. Carl attended Ferrington High School in Honolulu and later earned his GED.

 

A 25-year resident of Lacey, Washington, he also lived in Germany, California and Colorado while serving with the U.S. Army. He retired from the military in 1996 as a E-7. After retirement he worked as a census taker, and for Party Outfitters and last at Horizon Transport. He was a member of Mokuaina A. Wakinekona Hawaiian Civic Center.

 

Sam loved cooking Hawaiian food and playing his guitar with the Bradahs. He, and his bradah Cliff, were known to be inseparable. He was also known for telling his stories about his time in the Army, using the Shaka Brah hand signal, and letting everyone about the DaKine.

 

He is survived by his common law wife, Loretta "Hela" Aken of Lacey; sons, Kimo Sampaga of Ramstahl, Germany and Nick Aken of Lacey; daughters, Leila Ryusaki of Hilo, Hawaii, Marie "Lani" Trevino of San Antonio, Texas, and Monika "Ala" Sampaga of Germany; a total of nine grandchildren; mother, Barbara Steinhoff of Honolulu, Hawaii; and sisters, Raynette Bantolina, Journette Napeahi and April Rapez of Hawaii. He was predeceased by his father, Martin Sampaga.

 

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 20, 2019, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Alternatives Chapel, 2830 Willamette Dr. NE, Suite G, Lacey, WA 98516.  Following the services at 3:00 p.m., the celebration will continue at Uncle Cliff's house, 6630 Rehklau Rd. SE, Olympia, WA 98513.
