HE WAS THE DAD TO MANY WHEN THEIR FATHERS WERE DEPLOYED TO VIETNAM. HE WAS SCOUTMASTER OF TROOP 62 IN OAK HARBOR, WASHINGTON. I FIRST MET JT IN 1967, AUGUST .....
HE WAS GREGARIOUS, FUNNY AND A KID AT HEART. HE PLAYED FOOTBALL WITH THE "BOYS" AS THE ONLY ADULT. HE WAS HARD TO TACKLE BECAUSE HE CHEATED, WE WERE PLAYING FLAG FOOTBALL :) IT WAS MOSTLY TACKLE, PLAYED ON THE FIELD ACROSS FROM OAK HARBOR ELEMENTARY, WHICH WAS A BLOCK OR TWO FROM THE MORGAN FAMILY HOME. ALL THE GUYS IN THE TROOP CAME AND PLAYED, MOSTLY IN THE FALL AND WINTERTIME WHEN YOU NEEDED TO GET OUT DOORS AND STILL NOT FREEZE......THE GAME KEPT YOU WARM !!!
HE VOWED TO TAKE US ON A HIKE A MONTH, HIS PROMISE TO US. HE PRETTY MUCH KEPT THAT PROMISE OVER THE YEARS, ABOUT 4-5 IN TOTAL...I WAS IN JUNIOR HIGH, AND HE WAS THERE ALMOST THRU GRADUATION IN 1972. HE WAS THE CONSUMMATE ADULT LEADER, ATTENDING MANY TRAINING SESSIONS FOR SCOUTMASTERS AND BRINGING WHAT HE LEARNED BACK TO US BOYS. WE WERE A BUSY TROOP AND I ENDED UP AS THE SENIOR PATROL LEADER FOR ABOUT 18 MONTHS....GO FIGURE, MOST OF MY FRIENDS MADE EAGLE, I DIDN'T HAVE MUCH TIME, I WAS A PROFESSIONAL LIFE SCOUT AS IT TURNED OUT, ABOUT 5 MERIT BADGES SHORT OF EAGLE, BUT FRANKLY I WOULD NOT CHANGE ANY OF IT. SUMMER CAMP WAS FREAKING FUN AT CAMP BLACK MOUNTAIN, SILVER LAKE UP PAST MAPLE FALLS NEAR THE CANADIAN BORDER. WE SWAM THE LAKE, LEARNED TO CANOE AND ROW, PRACTICED LIFE SAVING IN THE WATER AND ON THE LAND, ARCHERY AND SHOOTING, PIONEERING , COOKING AND MANY OTHER MERIT BADGE CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES. THE ORDER OF THE ARROW TAP OUT WHEN WE HAD BEEN SELECTED BY OUR TROOP WAS HUGE. THE HONOR SOCIETY OF SCOUTING....MORE MEMORIES THAN I COULD SHARE HERE....I KEPT IN TOUCH WITH JT OVER THE MANY YEARS SINCE, HE AND JAN BECAME LONG TIME FRIENDS AND IT WAS ALWAYS A JOY TO MEET THEM FOR DINNER OR A FAMILY GATHERING.....ON WHIDBEY OR OLYMPIA.....WE NEVER MADE IT TO HAWAI'I, MY HOME STATE SADLY.....BUT THEY WOULD USE OUR PLACE FOR A QUICK HOTEL COMING THRU SEATAC A COUPLE OF TIMES BETWEEN HAWAI'I AND WHIDBEY....HE WOULD MAKE BETS WITH SCOUTS ON CAMP OUTS FOR COFFEE AND A WARM WET RAG IN THE AM CAMPING, IF HE WON THEY WOULD WAKE HIM WITH HOT COFFEE AND A HOT RAG TO WASH HIS FACE.....I NEVER SAW HIM LOSE A BET :) AND HE ALWAYS MADE A HUGE DEAL OF GETTING THE COFFEE AND ENJOYING THE WARM RAG...THERE WAS NEVER A SCOUT WHO DID NOT HAVE A WARM SPOT IN THEIR HEART FOR HIM.....HE PICKED UP EVERY STRAY BOY IN OAK HARBOR WITH A PROBLEM, AND TRIED TO HELP FIX THEM AS BEST HE COULD BY BRINGING THEM TO MEETING AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS.... WE WENT ON MANY HIKES SUMMER SPRING WINTER AND FALL, ALL WEATHER, WE WERE PREPARED OVER THE YEARS TO MEASURE UP IN ALL ADVERSITY.....WE WERE ALSO VERY COMPETITIVE AT TROOP CAMP-O-REES WITH OTHER TOWNS IN THE ISLAND , SKAGIT AND WHATCOM COUNTY AREA OF THE MOUNT BAKER DISTRICT OF THE BSA......
WELL, I MUST GO THINK ABOUT WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN HERE, TODAY I FOUND SOME OLD TROOP ROSTERS AND A COPY OF A COURT OF HONOR WHERE I WAS PRESENTED WITH LIFE SCOUT. ONE OF MY FRIENDS, JIM BEERS WAS MAKING EAGLE THAT EVENING ......LIKE I SAID, WOULD NOT CHANGE ANYTHING !!!
I LOVED THAT OLD SAILOR, TILL HIS LAST, AND STILL DO

I believe it was the fall of 1980 when Ron and I met Tom. As evidence of Tom’s winning personality, we knew him for about 5 minutes when we all decided to become housemates. Not only that, Tom was living in the house that we had just purchased for our growing family, and he talked us into letting him stay there! His reasoning was that we were young homebuyers, with a challenging new mortgage, and a spare bedroom. Tom wasn’t ready to move, and he suspected correctly that we could use a little rental income.
Outrageous as it seems now, that was the beginning of an enduring friendship. Not only did we get a financial boost from our new roomie, we got a fun companion for all of us, and perhaps most especially our toddler son. Tom was always ready for horseplay, but my sweetest memory is of him reading “The Highwayman” to our big-eyed 2 year old, mesmerized by the rhythm of Tom’s dep voice and that great classic poem.
We were there during the courtship months, first hearing about a special someone Tom was dating, and soon we had the pleasure of meeting Jan when Tom brought his intended home to “meet the folks”, as it were. Naturally, we approved, and blessed the union.
It was fun hanging with Tom and Jan, seeing them on stage, going on hikes, playing cards well into the night, and laughing so hard it hurt if Tom didn’t win at cribbage. He would rather play until sunup than lose the last game.
What energy the man had! We were somewhat younger but keeping up was still a challenge. Tom had the stamina of guys half his age, even into his 80’s. We miss him, and are ever so grateful for the good times.
