Lilis Nogler

Obituary of Lilis Carpenter Nogler

Lilis Carpenter Nogler passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2019.  She was born on February 9, 1924 in Ozone Park, Queens, New York.  She had deep roots in upstate New York and in Germany.  She told many stories of growing up in New York City.

Lilis was active in her school and at church music events, where she performed.  She was selected to audition for Juilliard School of Music when she was 16 years old.  After graduating from Franklin Lane High School in 1941, she attended Adelphi College in Garden City, New York.  In 1944, she travelled across the United States in a Studebaker with three friends to Seattle, where she lived with her mother’s brother in the University District.

Lilis met Neal Nogler at the University of Washington in an English class.  They married in 1952.  Lilis and Neal started their teaching careers at a one room school house in Benge, Washington.  Lilis taught primary school in Benge, Port Angeles, Montesano and Chehalis for over 30 years.  She was the organist and choir director at the Westminster Presbyterian church in Chehalis for 18 years.

Lilis and Neal retired to Mason Lake in 1990.  Lilis remained active through the Mason-Benson club, Mason County Democrats, as a school board member for the Grapeview School District, and as a columnist for the Mason County Journal, reporting on “Mason Lake Meanderings.”  She continued to play piano and performed with friends in a group called “The Mason Lake Piano Quartet.”

Lilis is survived by her four sons, Thomas, Jeffrey, Timothy (Susanna), and Stephen (Gretchen); and six grandchildren.
