Obituary of Dr. Lloyd H. Lauerman

Lloyd H. Lauerman, age 86, passed away February 10, 2019 in Olympia, Wash. He was born February 5, 1933, to Lloyd and Agnes Lauerman in Everett, Wash.  Over the years, he also lived in Mount Vernon and Pullman, Wash.; Madison, Wis.; Nairobi, Kenya; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Auburn, Ala.

 

Lloyd graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1951, and earned his Bachelor’s and DVM degrees from Washington State University; Master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison; and an honorary PhD degree from the University of Mongolia in Ulanbator.

 

As a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, he was first employed by Biological Specialties in Middleton, Wisc.  Between 1968 and 1972, he taught microbiology and set up a laboratory at the University of Nairobi in Nairobi, Kenya.  After returning to the U.S., he was employed at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.  In Auburn, Ala., he was employed at the State Diagnostic Laboratory, where he was proficient in microbiology, eventually doing PCR work and specializing in DNA technology.  He retired August 31, 1998 and moved to Olympia in 1999.  He felt his work was unfinished so worked for a branch of Washington State University in Puyallup, Wash., and later at the Brucellois Laboratory in Olympia.

 

Lloyd loved reading, photography, hunting, fishing, canoeing, hiking, basketball, swimming, and playing the trumpet.  An Eagle Scout, he later served as a Scoutmaster in Madison, Wisc. He was active in Toastmasters in Fort Collins.  Throughout his life, he was a member of several churches and participated in the choir.  He also held leadership positions and was a Sunday school teacher.  He enjoyed sharing the gospel and went on several mission trips to many countries.

 

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Lauerman of Olympia; son, Steven Lauerman, and daughter-in-law, Denise, of Loveland, Colo.; son, David Lauerman of LaGrange, Ga.; daughter, Susan Young, and son-in-law, Jeff of Huntsville, Ala.; two grandchildren, Ashley Young of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Ryan Young of Americus, Ga.; and sister, Jeanette Bayer of Sierra Madre, Calif.

 

Services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at Westwood Baptist Church in Olympia.
