Your Mom was a very compassionate woman. She was my son's advocate at BHHS and I never doubted she wanted the best for him and all her students. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I first met Illona as a parent to awesome Peter G. students and I thought she was so awesome, funny, and kind. Then, I got to know her better when she subbed at my school before she started at Black Hills. She always showed kindness to everyone and was just so friendly and sweet. Anytime I'd see her at trainings or elsewhere around town, it was always great to hear how the girls were doing, and then eventually also about her grandchildren. I'm so sorry that we have lost her. The world needs more people like Illona. And nothing against any other parent of students I've taught, but she's right up there as a total favorite parent. Just one of the coolest people I've ever known.

I shared many firsts with Ilona and will never forget her graciousness, her nonjudgmental attitude, her ability to accept with ease what was handed to her, and her beautiful smile and beautiful, bright red hair. Firsts with her: going to the ocean with her family on their very first trip, watching the awe and amazement in their eyes, making a homemade pizza alone, just Ilona and me, mt first slumber party ever that she hosted, using binoculars to look at the neighborhood boys we had crushes on (you know who you are!), and empathizing with her one summer when she couldn’t swim due to a broken collar bone and subsequent brace she had to wear. I won’t even go into our Centralia College years!
Ilona, you made a huge impact on me in a most positive way. No question you will be leading the angels soon and showing them your gracious spirit. My condolences to your family.

Oh beautiful. I remember my first day of high school over at Black Hills. I was not off to a good start and you saw right away. You had me have lunch with you and told me don't let these kids get me down. You introduced me to one of my very best friends still to this day. You baked me goods and would wrap them in cute red ribbons. You knew red was my favorite color. I remember when you got your whippet; boy were you in for it. But you stayed so positive and loved that dog even though you couldn't catch a break. You were so loving and knew so many things. Gave me courage and hope that I was gonna succeed. I remember coming to you when I got my diploma and you were so happy for me. I'm sad to see you gone but you make the most perfect angel there ever was. I love you Mrs Root. You made a big impact on my life and I'll never forget you.

Miss Root was one of my favorite High School teachers. She was a really amazing woman! she loved having me in her class and always told me I can achieve anything I put my mind to like graduating from high school when I was a young single mom. It took me longer but I graduated. I remember how happy and proud she was of me and I will never forget her! You will truly be missed Miss Root!
