Peter was my introduction to oceanography and I remember well how he taught us to carefully observe. He had a unique ability to take a bunch of kids and bring us into nature so that we could really begin to see and understand both from an observational point of view and from a scientific understanding. It was a great class from a great professor and teacher. I ended up working for a year as an ocean observer when I started my only background was this class and it served me well. Later on, I worked on an oceanographic boat doing sampling for two years. These were important times in my life and I realize they never would have happened without this patient and wonderful teacher who introduced all of us to the world. I am sorry, I never had a chance to tell him this. Though I think he knows all the good he did in this world. He will be missed, though it is not so long before we all will follow in his footsteps. love will carry us through

Pete was my amazing faculty for all 4 years at Evergreen-not only in Olympia, but also in Hawaii as well. He was a great mentor for me, a young and nervous college student who wanted to make the world a better place. He had a great sense of humour, especially when he found a doodle of mine that accidentally was mixed in with a paper I had turned in. I had doodled a picture of Pete, next to a picture of a light bulb (in my 17 year old mind, I thought his head resembled that of a light bulb) I had put an equals sign between the two doodles with the quotation underneath “professor or enlightened being??? Hmmm...” He handed it back to me later with a smile drawn on the picture saying “ both!” I was truly inspired by him and he helped me realise my dream to also become a Marine Biologist. Thanks Pete! I hope I too can inspire others the way you did for me!

I will miss seeing the extended community of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and dear, dear family who come together in celebration of Pete's life and his fine contributions to the world, but I'll be thinking of you--and especially thinking of Pete and Ginny. Pete was what our world needs most: an articulate, thoughtful gentleman. Hugs and much love to you, Ginny, and the UU congregation.

Pete was probably the most sensitive and caring instructor I've ever had. With all of the personal and individual help and care he gave me and other students, I wondered where he found the time. He gave me new ways of looking at things. I feel extremely fortunate to have had him as an instructor back in the 80s.

Pete was my teacher in two Evergreen programs: Marine Organisms and Tropical Reef Ecology. I spent a lot of time with him in class and in the field. The moments I enjoyed the best were the two of us in a lab at Friday Harbor or on SCUBA in Hawaii when we did a full moon dive to witness all the creatures spawning their little hearts out, and another time on the North Shore of Maui when we dove on a lava flow to see Pete's beloved Lionfish. It was during those times, during our one to one conversations about biology, that I learned the most from Pete. He was a quiet spoken man, not pyrotechnic to say the least, but in the quiet of his passions he revealed his knowledge and I am thankful for him. My deepest condolences to his family and all those who knew and loved him. Sincerely, Joey Blum, TESC 1978.
