I had the honor to know Andy at Ft Riley. I hunted, fished, built things, and ran beside him. He was one for the books, I will always remember “do it perfect the first time” to me that’s something I carry from him to this day. You will not be forgotten my friend, as I’ve done in the past I will continue to tell stories of you around a fire as long as I am able to. To Andy’s family he was one of the best people I had the honor to know. God bless all of you.

I met Andy a few years ago at our garage sale. He bought out all our fishing supplies. He had asked us if he could bring us fish. I had offered to buy any from him. No, he insisted he wanted to bring us fish he caught out in the Sound. When he told me his name was Andy Oakes. I asked him if his mother name was Elizabeth? Andy teared up and said YES you knew her? I told him she was my first boss at a nursing home. I had so much respect for her and often think of her. (One of a kind). As I see Andy was the same.
Not long ago I had thought of Andy he was such a wonderful man. So sad today when I heard this about him. Rest young Andy now your with your parents. My condolences to his wife and family.

I first met Andy in the early 70's. He was a dirty-faced kid playing in the sand down at the Nisqually River with matchbox cars while his dad fished for steelhead. Little did I know that it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship and brotherhood. All I could think of at the time was: "this kid is cool!"
There are so many great memories in my 43+ years of knowing him that there's not enough room here to list them (I tried, but ran out of room). Most of the memories had to do with fishing and playing loud rock and roll! He was a great man who loved our kids and was the greatest Godfather. He helped bring me to Christ--the greatest gift of all. I am at Peace knowing he is no longer in pain from his illness and that he is safely in the grasp of our Heavenly Father.
Andy, thank you for being my lifelong friend and brother. I am a better man because of you. I will see you again someday...til then: FISH ON!

I've known Andy since he was a kid hanging down by the Nisqually with his dad. And I do believe that is where he met my brother Gil along with my Uncle Jim. I sensed something special with Andy. He reminded me of me growing up. I will miss him like he was my brother. He is truly a big part in our family. Don't mourn his passing. Celebrate his life with the lord.

I'll never forget the first time that I met you. We had some station commanders and recruiter's in the Battalion that we're doing some bad things. You said to me Sergeant mock I have to end the soldiers careers and I could tell it really bothered you. I said sir they did it to themselves. In all my 22 years in the military I never met a leader that cared as much for his soldiers and their families as you did.

I loved Andy Oakes, he was role-model classmate growing up!
I still remember him turning Thayer Mallette upside down and then accidentally dropped him on his head. We were about six yrs old, poor Andy was so upset for dropping Thayer that he went home.
A good person and a great kid! Rest in peace Andy.

See you at the top Sir! It was an honor serving in your Command. Samantha and I still laugh about the time you came to dinner at our house with Mike Lynch and Cameron Cashman. We had moose roast with roasted vegetables. Unbeknownst to me, Samantha snuck in Brussels Spouts into the meal and you let the cat out of the bag! I haven’t had to eat them since! Thanks for the laughs, leadership and guidance. You will be forever thought of very fondly.

LT. COL Oakes was one of my favorite BN Commanders. I first met him when I was lower enlisted in the Infantry. I met him again a few years later in the Seattle Recruiting BN. I was surprised when he remembered me. He could even remember the location of our few times we spoke together. He always treated his soldiers with respect and we loved him for his leadership. We continued to see each other on the river and he always stopped and took the time to have a few words. Always Remembered!

I'm still shocked about the passing of my Friend and Mentor Andy. I had the pleasures of serving with him and becoming great friends. I had the opportunity to learn from him along the way.
One of his favorite groups and mine was AC/DC. As we worked with the Soldiers of the Seattle Recruiting BN our theme song was "It's a Long way to the TOP if you want to Rock and Roll'' He and I would play this song to get fired up for briefings, events and on the way to fishing holes.
We spent a lot of time across the command with Soldiers and Families and he thoroughly enjoyed meeting and knowing all of them. Along the way I also met some of his family members, during some crab camps and fellow Soldiers he served with along the way.
He picked up the nick name Grande Blanco Oakes along one of our Adventures and it stuck with him and I forever.
He will be sadly missed by my family and our friends. I am proud to have had the honor of knowing him and having him in my life for the short time I did. I will always remember him and have him and his family in my heart. A great man, friend, mentor and caring person with a will to change bad situations.
As you cross into heaven know that you are still loved and missed here by all who had the great fortune to cross paths in your life. RIP Andy until Valhalla and we meet again. Slow Hand Salute and safe journey in heaven. Your friend Mike

I met Andy one winter morning in Kansas. I was part of a duck hunting party and out of the darkness walked this large man...Andy. He was out hunting himself and a friendship begin that early morning many years ago. I moved on as well as Andy due to our military duties, but upon moving to Ft. Lewis, to my surprise, Andy was soon to be stationed here as well. We shared many days on the river fishing and telling stories. Andy was a great listener, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a great Military Officer, but more importantly, he was a great man. I, along with many others, will greatly miss him.
He was our "Superman". On the river guiding his boat with ice on our poles and we sitting in the boat shivering, stood Andy controlling the boat looking like a stone statue. I seemed the cold had no effect on him.
God be with you Andy. You are greatly missed.

Retired LTC Andy Oakes was one of the finest Battsliom Commanders I worked with. He showed how much he cared for Soldiers. I’m pretty strong person but his friendship strengthened me more. He served and exemplified through his ruggedness a compassion for all. We will always love and miss him. I’m grateful he allowed me in to be his friend. And Andy as much as I tried to deny it like you said I am a country girl.

Although I knew Andy but a few short years, I considered him a very good friend. His faith, friendship and strength assisted me through several back surgeries. Pushing me to keep going fishing, gardening and not to give up. Serveral times he has said prayers for me before going fishing. And several times he told me, he and his beautiful wife and best friend Sheri would keep me in their prays. Andy will always be in my heart in my prayers and will always be a great friend
So to Sheri you have my deepest and most heart felt condolences.
