Obituary of Johnathan N. Doe

Johnathan N. Doe, 91, third son of Christian C. and Helen (King) Doe, was born in Bigelow, Kansas, on May 17, 1926, and died December 26, 2017, at his home in Olympia, Washington.  John attended northeast Kansas rural schools and graduated in 1944 from Frankfort High School, where he lettered in track and basketball.  Working in construction kept him in Kansas until he followed his middle brother, Chris, to Western Oregon and then to the Puyallup, Washington area.  John married Arvella Zander from Richland, Washington, had a son Kevin in 1959, and later divorced.  In 1970, Lee married Margie Larsen of Tumwater, Washington, gaining two stepchildren, Becky and James.

John loved to play cards, especially party bridge, which he played until he was 89.  Always an avid sports enthusiast, he coached one of Becky’s softball teams.  He was quoted, "If Becky played ball on the moon, we'd be there.”  John enjoyed attending the horse races at Longacres and, after retiring, would travel to British Columbia to watch the harness races.  Watching the Mariners and Gonzaga men's basketball were his favorite pastime.

John was a competitive, high-scoring bowler on several men's bowling teams, with his highest score being 298.  Later in 1985, while bowling in a mixed league with wife Margie, stepson James and Kathy Hemphill, John scored a perfect score of 300.

Retiring from the Boeing Company after 31 years allowed time to enjoy RVing with the Elks Capitol Pioneers Travel Club and the 4C's (Crazy Cousins Camping Club) for 18 years.  RVing took him north to Alaska, south to Cabo San Lucas, and as far east to Kansas for a high school class reunion.

John was a 60-year member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers and a lifetime member of the Olympia Elks Lodge 186.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harry and Chris; and granddaughter, Rose.  Survivors are his wife, Margie; son, Kevin of Walla Walla, Washington; stepchildren, James Shupp (Miki Hadfield) and Becky Shupp (Ann Robbins), all of Olympia; and grandson, Ryan Doe of Anacortes, Washington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Animal Services, 3120 Martin Way East, Olympia, WA 98506, or the Washington Elks Therapy Program.
