Susan Black

Obituary of Susan Margaret Black

Susan passed away on December 29, 2014. She was born in 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, to Robert Morris and Margaret Dowds Morris. Susan attended the University of Oklahoma, but most importantly met the love her life, Ken Black. They married on July 18, 1966, and had sons Daniel and Nathan. They lived in Oklahoma and San Diego before making homes in Corvallis, OR, and Olympia, WA. Susan returned back to school, first getting her A.D,/ R.N. in Oregon and then attending The Evergreen State College (B.A. Liberal Arts). In addition to her long career in nursing, her true passion was her art. She loved using her computer and artistic skills in many ways, enhancing historical photos, creating artistic renditions of angels, and painting unique studies of “mother and child.” We have fond memories of her displaying her artwork at the biannual Olympia Arts Walk event. Susan often joked that she was the “quiet one,” in her partnership with Ken, and they enjoyed almost 45 years of marriage before he passed in 2011. Susan cherished her sons, daughters-in-law (finally, daughters!) and her grandchildren. She took pride in her faith and service to Jesus, especially teaching children and working with youth in Sunday school. Susan, we know you are up in heaven listening to Ken’s jokes once again, and creating artistic visions in many mediums. We’ll miss your smile and laugh, your thoughtfulness and caring for others, your creativity, and your passion for church and family. You are loved. Susan is predeceased by husband, Ken Black; and sister, JoAnn Babine. She is survived by son, Dan Black, Karin and grandkids, Delia and Samuel; son, Nathan Black, Jolene and grandkids, Simon and Eva; brothers, Brian Morris (Dawnn) and Robert Morris (Maria); and other numerous relatives and friends, especially those at the Church of Christ. A service will be held to celebrate Susan’s life on Sunday, February 15, 2015, at 3:30 p.m., followed by a brief reception, at the Church of Christ, 3132 Boulevard Road SE, Olympia, WA 98501. Donations can be made to the Church of Christ for the “Baby Bank” ministry, or your favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
