Obituary of Howard Wood

Howard Wood, 92, of Ilwaco, Washington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 22, 2017. Howard was born in Bellingham, Washington, to Mary and John Wood. He grew up in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from Benson Poly Technic High School. In 1942, Howard joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed as a machine gunner to the South Pacific. He fought in the Battle of Saipan in 1944. Howard married the love of his life, Marceta, on March 14, 1946. They were married for 71 years. Howard enrolled in the University of Portland after his military service and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education. He continued his love of learning through-out his life. Howard was the principal of Rose Valley, as well as Catlin elementary schools in Kelso, and ran a charter boat during the summer months in Ilwaco. He was predeceased by his daughter, Christine Britton in 2001. Howard is survived by his wife, Marceta; and their children, Kathleen Wilkman (Martin), Victoria Stevens (Erick), Marlene Cinkovich (Gene), Patrick Wood (Nancy), Cynthia Winger (Larry), and Joseph Wood (Tatiana). Howard has numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Howard enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, woodworking, and the beautiful ocean view from his home in Ilwaco. His passions were working with children as an educator and spending time with his “good family.” When Howard retired 1979, he began traveling to Mexico every winter with Marceta. They enjoyed the sun, fishing, and their time together. Howard captured the hearts of everyone he met with his kindness, broad smile, and quick wit.
